The Highlander Cafe

Colin, Natalie & Rory MacPherson

(Looks like we know who wears the pants in this family)

Meet Colin and Natalie MacPherson, owners and operators of a cozy cafe bringing a wee taste of Scotland right here in Crystal River, Florida on Citrus Avenue just off Highway 19. Highlander Cafe offers delicious breakfast and lunch sandwiches and salads, unique to this area as well as great coffee, latte's and teas both hot and iced.

Colin MacPherson first came to the United States the year President Kennedy was shot as he remembers being sent home from school in Boston when the tragedy occurred. Colin's father had first come to this country with $10 in his pocket and played in a Bagpipe band. Colin himself learned to play the Bagpipes but still boasts his father's ability as a musician. This tradition has now been passed down to his sons Rory and Calum, as well.

Years later after his return to Scotland to the area of Argyll, he met his bride Natalie at a dance. Their friendship eventually grew into romance and they were married in 1980. Colin apprenticed as a Carpenter there and eventually went to work for himself.

This adventurous couple then moved to Massachusetts and then back to Scotland where their son's were born. Colin then made his living running his own small construction company and heavy plant business and Natalie worked as his bookkeeper. The adventure continued as the MacPherson*s took a few vacations right here in Florida falling in love with this beautiful tropical state. Their love of this paradise finally brought them out here to make this their home and after looking all over Florida they settled on our very own town of Crystal River, with its small town charm, the MacPherson's found its people to happy and friendly. Their sons found growing up here suited them just fine.

Natalie is a fabulous cook and credits her love for cooking from her days with her grandmother and her culinary influences to Colin's Aunt Anne who was always happy to pass on her tips for making a tasty dish. This love for cooking birthed Highlander Cafe.

Colin and Natalie began Highlander Cafe on Citrus Avenue a few doors down serving the same homemade sandwiches, salads, soups and desserts that bring customers from many miles regularly, to enjoy them again at its present location which had its opening in December after they purchased the property and did the renovations themselves. They have created a delightfully welcoming eatery with delicious foods unique in this area, in a clean and joyful atmosphere where the happy music of Scotland plays in the background and the decor speaks of their homeland for everyone to enjoy a full experience.

Colin and Natalie have both commented that since Highlander first opening 4 years ago, through it they have met many wonderful people, making many friends, and loyal customers. Natalie believes that a team effort and the combination of good food, music and atmosphere is what makes their little piece of Scotland a very special place for people to return to again and again.

CAKES AND CREATIONS - This was a thank you note from Jane Meek that we wanted to share. "That was the best cake I ever put in my mouth! Gail enjoyed it too. I shared some with friends and neighbors and they all said they were going to get you to make one for them." The pleasure was all ours, Mrs. Meek! Only the BEST for the BEST!
~ Charles McCray

ALL ABOUT NATURE / MAYO GALLERY - MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM THE HERITAGE HOUSE!!! Yes, we have a beautiful Christmas tree growing on our lawn!  It is better known as the Century Plant.  In the Virgin Islands the stalk is used as a Christmas tree!  It is painted and placed in a bucket of rocks.  Ornaments and lights are then hung from the branches.  It has really been exciting watching this plant bloom and finding out all of the interesting things that the plant and stalk can provide.  You should really stop by and take your picture with this plant as it is getting more and more beautiful day by day!!

My Grandfather,
 Through My Mom's Eyes...

I am picking up where I left off in May, and also writing about some of my Mom's memories of her Dad, being June 20, 2010 is Father's Day.

Hugh Caffey Barco

(Katherine B. Tolle's
late father)
Mom's father's name was Hugh Caffey Barco. Caffey was his mother's maiden name. He was born September 19, 1897 and died February 14, 1966. He was one of Katherine's and Nickabud Barco's five children. Four boys and a girl, with Hugh (granddaddy) being the oldest, Claude, Paul, Loch and Minnie ("Sister" was her nickname). Nickabud (their father) was born May 6, 1847 and died May 22, 1927. Before he was married to Katherine Caffey, he was married to Florida Allen (from the Lecanto area), and had two boys. Florida passed away at an early age.
