Greetings!

The August issue of the Communiqué magazine will focus on Social Justice.  In MArch of this year, two National Board members attended the 54th United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW)and have much to share with us.  Their story begins in this edition of our eCommuniqué and will continue on the pages of the next Communiqué. Please be aware that in addition to the many articles that are submitted on the fine work and activities of local ECW, we are asking our readers to submit articles about the Social Justice work that has been done and/or is in progress.  Please submit any article to your Province Rep before June 21st.

The eCommuniqué is sent regularly between the 20th and 25th of each month. We thank you for subscribing and for forwarding this new communication tool to your friends using the link here:
Forward to a Friend  We are especially grateful and are pleased to acknowledge top 'Forwarding Angels' Meredith Killingsworth, Helen Laughton, Judy Turner and Rita Payne-Samuel.

Remember, when you use the "Forward Email" link we will be able to see how many emails you personally forward to your friends. If you are one of the Top Forwarders you'll see your name in the next issue of the eCommuniqué!

We do hope you enjoy this issue!

Blessings,

This is Not Your Grandmother's ECW, Nor Your Mother's.

ECW eCommunique BannerFor me, it has become tiring and trying to hear any number of women say that all they know or remember about Episcopal Church Women (ECW) are little old ladies having teas or that ECW is no longer relevant.  If being at the 54th United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW) in March did anything, it made me more aware that ECW's ideals and what they stand for are needed and more relevant than ever.  If it were not for the ECW, many of us would not be where we are today, serving at all levels in the Church and most levels of the government, working in professions, not thought of so many years ago, going into outer space, being activists for change in laws and employment and so many more accomplishments.  Even though ECW women initiated several activists' issues, they were not alone in these struggles.  And that is another point so well demonstrated at the 54th UNCSW.  I witnessed this at every event attended, especially the following:

February 27th and 28th Salvation Army NGO (Non-Governmental Organizations) Global Forums:
Panels of distinguished women from many parts of the world told of their experiences since the first World Conference on Women, accomplishments, disappointments and strategies for the future. The panelist's topics included but were limited to:
   1. Advancing Women's Rights, 1975-2010: What the World Conference on Women Accomplished
   2. The State of the World's Women: Patriarchy, Violence Against Women and Girls, Women's Health and Climate Change
   3. Voices From Around the World: Regional Priorities and Action
   4. Fulfilling the Promise of Gender Equality, Peace, and Development: Women, Peace and Security, Strengthening Institutional Mechanisms, World Economic crisis, Building Women's Leadership and the Millennium Development Goals
(Panelists names and topics available upon request)

At this same event, Dr. Vivian Pender, Chair NGO/CSW, New York, NY reminded us of what still remains to be done in order to accomplish full equality for women, what we must continue to address, and the lack of progress in some areas, especially in combating violence against women, improving women's and maternal health. She also stated that the majority of the world's children still live in poverty and that the NGO's are in prime positions to protest lack of accomplishment to ensure gender equality.
Triennial Countdown Begins with Committee Requests
ECW eCommunique BannerPatsy Duncan, Province VII Representative to the ECW National Board, was our hostess when we met in Oklahoma City in April/May, and chairs the Worship Committee for Triennial 2012 in Indianapolis, Indiana

Worship Committee creates Requirements and Nomination Forms for Triennial Chaplain, Musician

The planning for the Trennial Meeting of Episcopal Church Women actually begins before the last box is packed and the last Triennial meeting ends. For the National ECW Board, our first meeting after General Convention 2009 was spent reviewing the last Triennial and creating a timeline for the next one in 2012.Our VP of Program, Cordelia Burt (Province VIII ECW President) has the next Triennial well in hand, and is in regular communication with the team in place to organize General Convention 2012 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Each Board Member is part of the Triennial organization team, and early this month we met in Oklahoma City at St. Crispin's Conference Center to continue the work begun last Fall in Washington D.C.

The Worship Committee has created the Requirements and Nomination Forms for two of our VITPs (Very Important Triennial People)and is asking for your help if you know someone who might fit the bill. We are looking for a  Triennial Chaplain and a Triennial Musician. All the information has been posted to the Triennial web page, so if you know a clergy person and/or a musician with a good sense of humor who might be the perfect fit to lead a group of Episcopal Church Women in prayer and contemplation or music and song for 8 days in July of 2012, click that link ,take a look at the rest of the requirements, and consider nominating them.

Application Deadline is September 15, 2010

Elsie's Inbox

Elsie gets a MouseHi ECW! Ever since I got hooked up with my new computer I can't put my mouse down, even for a minute! Wow! A whole new world has opened up for me. Sometimes, though, I think things are moving along too fast for me to keep up, and I know some of you feel the same way. Consider this question I received from Katherine R. in California:

Dear Elsie,
I know that ECW stands for Episcopal Church Women, and UN stands for United Nations, but I really get confused with all the other acronyms being used these days. Could the ECW web site provide some help, especially with all the Social Justice terms I think I should be familiar with?

Sure Katherine! I know just how you feel! People keep asking me what the letters on my new T-shirt stand for, and I have to stop and think every time. With our next issue of the Communique focusing on Social Justice, we will be learning more about the UNCSW - the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, and the important role of NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations) like the Episcopal Church and other faith communities. I've done a little online surfing and found some very helpful links that you can use to find out more about them:

The United Nations Commission on the Status of Women - http://www.un.org/womenwatch/daw/csw/index.html#about

NGO participation in annual sessions of the UN Commission on the Status of Women http://www.un.org/womenwatch/daw/csw/NGO.html

I'm researching online to compile a Glossary of Acronyms for the ECW National Web Site. Please send your suggestions for acronyms to include to me via email.

Do you know that "ECW" also stands for ME? Elsie Chelsea Worthmore! Please email your questions to me at ECW@ecwnational.org. Your question (with your name and diocese noted) may be answered in next month's eCommuniqué.

United Thank Offering Face to Face

The Face to Face Weekend is an opportunity for diocesan coordinators to meet with the UTO Board gaining knowledge in the ministry of the United Thank Offering. This year the week-end of July 16-18, 2010 will consist of workshops, activities and fun.

Participants will be learning skills to expand connections within your diocese, gain some UTO financial wisdom, experience multiple ways to communicate the ministry of prayer and thankfulness and meeting others who are also involved with UTO. This week-end is an opportunity to meet new friends, gather resources, ideas and work on creatively telling the story of UTO.

Would you like to join us?

Thank you for subscribing. We do hope you will spread the word by forwarding this newsletter using the link below.
