The Crew Leader program was developed to help increase the capacity of volunteers on the build site. With a goal of building a minimum of four homes this year, Crew Leaders will be a vital piece to puzzle. Without Crew Leaders we are limited in how many groups and projects we can have at one time. Crew Leaders will help the site supervisor in leading small groups of volunteers so that we can work on multiple projects at a time.
The first Evergreen Habitat for Humanity Crew Leader Training had 16 volunteers who completed the course on February 28th. The graduates of the program were either previous Habitat volunteers with a good understanding of the Habitat program or others who had construction and previous crew leading experience. The 6-week long course included classroom sessions with three additional Saturday trainings for hands on building experience at Lowe's in Lacamas Lakes and at the Habitat for Humanity Store in Vancouver. We would like to especially thank our instructors: Mark Haley, Paul Sybor, Dave Gray, Dennis Smith, Rich Helmke, Jon Pudlitzke, Gerri Colburn, Nacy Gaston and Tom Gibbons for making our Crew Leader Training successful.
Next year's training will build on the lessons learned in this build year as we continue to grow our program. We anticipate holding the next Crew Leader Training in the Fall of 2012.
CONGRATULATIONS CREW LEADERS!!!!!! |
Evergreen Habitat for Humanity has "Rock Star" Interns
Evergreen Habitat for Humanity would like to introduce you to our Spring 2012 interns.
Our Family Services intern, Melina Montes, is currently a senior at Washington State University Vancouver and is majoring in sociology. Melina became interested in interning at Habitat due to struggles her family went through in finding decent, affordable housing when she was younger. "I know from firsthand experience the positive effects that home ownership has on a family," says Melina. Melina's future goals include working for a non-profit after graduation as well as attending graduate school.
Stephanie Del Real is our Special Events intern. She is attending Washington State University Vancouver and majoring in sociology with a goal of obtaining a Master's degree in Criminology or Sociology. Stephanie has been involved in several recent events including Crew Leader Training, the Women Build Rally and several volunteer recruitment fairs. "I am happy to be welcomed with open arms into a fantastic organization. It has been a great place to learn, intern and gain the experience necessary for the real world," says Stephanie.
Latonya Waites is a student at Everest College and is completing an Administrative Assistance externship through Evergreen Habitat for Humanity. "Being able to extern here for Everest College has opened my eyes to a new horizon of being able to give back to my community," says Latonya. "Being able to be a part of the impact that they have to offer gives hope to better future." Latonya plans on continuing her work in non-profit organizations after graduating this August.
We are currently recruiting for interns for the summer and fall so if you are interested in joining the EHFH team, you can find out more on our website. |
