Volunteers Raise Roofs and Continue Building Process on Homes in Patten Park Subdivision

Volunteers and team building groups have been donating their time and energy to help build the Habitat homes in the Patten Park subdivision and getting them closer to completion.
"The houses have finished being framed, the windows were installed last week and we are now starting on the roofing and siding," Building Site Supervisor Bernie Lewis said. Lewis described how the roofing work will continue over the next few weeks in order to complete the papering and shingling process. They will also be digging trenches to put the sewer lines in for both houses.
"People are always willing to help, we have approximately 15 to 30 volunteers come out on build days to volunteer and there is a lot of activity with both houses being built at the same time."
The Soria home is sponsored by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and the Jatskovski home is being sponsored by Wells Fargo Bank and have volunteers participating through both organizations. Next month the building process will involve completing the drywall and painting. The workers will also be adding siding to the house as they finish all the mechanical systems including the heating, electrical and plumbing. Once the homes are completely weatherproof, the drywall process will begin. They plan to also build retaining walls to separate the lots between the property lines. According to Lewis, the homes are scheduled to be completed by December so the families will be able to move in by the end of the year. "The families are excited about moving into their new homes and have been working hard to complete their sweat equity hours," Lewis said.

| Bank of America Chooses Patrick McCarthy to be Evergreen Habitat for Humanity Intern
Patrick McCarthy |
Patrick McCarthy enjoyed his summer as Evergreen Habitat for Humanity's (EHFH) intern under the Bank of America's Student Leaders program that assists non-profits with various projects.
"We believe in investing in the communities where we do business," said Bank of America Vancouver Market President David Moss. "The Student Leaders program provides support for the next generation of community leaders, and we're ecstatic to partner with a valuable organization like Evergreen Habitat for Humanity. Habitat's mission of partnering with low-income families is a perfect match for Bank of America, working to support community development, creating homeownership opportunities for families in our area and revitalizing neighborhoods around Southwest Washington." The eight week paid internship program chooses students who have demonstrated a strong focus in community service work and then matches those students with different non-profit organizations around the country. "We really appreciate the Bank of America program and having Patrick intern with us. He has made a real difference for our affiliate and we feel extremely fortunate to have him here," Executive Director Kristina Aitchison said. McCarthy, who lives in Washougal, just finished his junior year at Washougal High School and currently holds a 3.99 grade point average, has taken AP classes, and is President of the Interact Club. All of which helped to qualify him for the program. In his spare time he participates

Rotary Club Builds and Donates Gazebo Through Their Hammer and Nails Project

A gazebo was built and donated by The Rotary Club of Greater Clark County through their Hammer and Nails community service project and recently showcased at the Parade of Homes in Clark County. "We are so grateful to the Rotarians for their continued support and belief in our mission and their willingness to lend a hand to Habitat," Executive Director Kristina Aitchison said. Russ Chambers, who is currently serving as Past President of the Evergreen Habitat for Humanity board, helped to coordinate the building project. The gazebo, a cedar wood structure stands at 11 and 1/2 feet high and is 8 feet wide. According to Chambers, the gazebo took a day of preparation work to pre-cut and lay out all the pieces and then about a day and a half for 15 volunteers to build and assemble it at the home of Dorman Holcomb, who is a retired contractor. "It's like building a Habitat House, you want people of all walks of life to participate, it takes time and this is a mini scale of that," Chambers said. The Rotary Club has donated other Hammer and Nails projects in the past that have included play houses and work sheds. "We have Rotarians that serve on our board and on several of our committees. The Vancouver Rotary Club Foundation recently funded a grant for us and as a whole the local organization is a wonderful partner for us," Executive Director Kristina Aitchison said. Weighing approximately 1500 pounds, the structure was moved to the Parade of Homes site by the Vancouver Sign Company who donated time, employees, a crane, and a flat bed vehicle to transport the gazebo.

McCarthy article continued
in horse barrel racing, tennis, soccer and building robots for competitions.
"I have learned a lot about non-profits and how Habitat works and learning how to contribute to other people in need is a big plus for me," McCarthy said. Approximately 120 people applied for the internship earlier this year, with McCarthy being one of five being selected for the Portland area which included a paid one week trip to Washington, DC. Traveling to Washington the third week in July included a full schedule of events such as leadership sessions, learning how non-profits and government work together, touring Capitol Hill and working on a watershed service project. As the EHFH intern, McCarthy has been busy learning about all the different aspects of how a non-profit organization runs on a daily basis. "It's an amazing program that provides homes and opportunities for people in need, a program that is by the community and for the community." McCarthy has worked on a variety of projects that are related to Habitat events and the homeowner application process. He has also had the opportunity to work at the construction site and in the Habitat ReStore where he has accepted donations, stocked, and helped to organize the store. After graduating high school, McCarthy plans to attend Stanford University in California and study nuclear engineering and possibly work with an engineering firm or invent something beneficial for society. "Albert Einstein is the person I most admire, and he turned out to be one the most proficient scientist." When asked what he would tell someone who is interested in being an intern next summer, McCarthy summarizes this way:
"I believe in being involved in whatever you love the most. If you don't get involved in community service you never learn about people."
