Students from Clark College's architectural class recently spent 172 hours helping Evergreen Habitat for Humanity (EHFH) update their home designs.

"This was an opportunity to get real work and real life experience," Susan Mangin, adjunct professor of the Architectural Drafting 2 - CADD 210 class said.  Part of a three week project, the class of eight students took hand drawn designs from volunteer architect, David Commeree and electronically updated them.

Kristina Aitchison, Executive Director of EHFH, Mangin and Commeree all met with the students to explain the plans as Mangin instructed them throughout the process.

"We are so grateful to all the students for their hard work in taking on this project for us, it was a great collaborative effort," Aitchison said.

The class project included a site plan for the three bedroom Soria family home and a complete set of construction drawings for the Jatskovski four bedroom home. Each student was assigned to complete a different drawing.  This set included a floor plan,

foundation/framing plan, roof plan, building section, details, electrical plan, site plan, and four elevation drawings.  AutoCAD 2010 software program was used for the project as well as Revit 2010 for three dimensional drawings of each house.

"I was pleased by how quickly the students produced the drawings." Mangin said.

Once all the plans were completed, the students then submitted them to Clark County where they got the opportunity to meet David Maret, Plans Examiner in the Community Development department.  The class received a tour of the facility and officially submitted the plans to obtain the permits.  They also met with Plans Examiner, Michelle Wall and Permit Technician, Melissa Curtis to discuss the process.

"It was a nice finish of the project to go to the county office," Mangin said.

As the construction begins this spring for EHFH, the class also hopes to volunteer in helping with the framing of the house to obtain practical experience as well.

"One of the students lives in the neighborhood and is really looking forward to seeing the homes being built," Mangin said.

Future collaborations between Habitat and Clark College includes a design presentation class project where the students will be creating 3ft. by 4ft. signs to be placed at the EHFH construction site. These signs will feature each family name and a picture of their house for everyone to see.

"I think your (EHFH) organization is great!  I was really pleased that Kristina gave this project to students to do and we are really looking forward to working more with you in the future," Mangin said.
