New Officers Named to ACOG Boards and Committees
Officers for fiscal year 2011 have been named and will lead the Association in the next year as it considers mobility, public safety and quality of life issues that impact Central Oklahoma.

Kathy McMillan (pictured), Councilmember, Moore, has been named Chair of the ACOG Board of Directors and the Intermodal Transportation Policy Committee. Sam Bowman, Oklahoma City Councilmember, will continue to serve as Vice-Chair of the board.  Willa Johnson, Oklahoma County Commissioner, District 1, will serve as Secretary-Treasurer.

The 9-1-1 Association of Central Oklahoma Governments has also named new officers.  Ken Bartlett, Del City Councilmember, has been nominated to Chair.  Rachel Butler, Norman Councilmember, will serve as Vice-Chair. David Dirkschneider, Warr Acres Councilmember, has been nominated to Secretary/Treasurer. The 9-1-1 Association was formed to implement and manage the emergency number system for communities in the Central Oklahoma region.

Finally, the Garber-Wellington Policy Committee elected officers, including Chairman Jim Pumphrey, Mayor of Nicoma Park; Elizabeth Waner, Edmond Councilmember as Vice-Chair, and Mark Sharpton, Logan County Commissioner as Secretary/Treasurer. The Garber-Wellington Policy Committee works on policy and issues that impact Central Oklahoma's aquifer, surface water and water systems.

ACOG is blogging, tweeting, and flipping
The Association of Central Oklahoma Governments is plunging feet first in the deep waters of new media.  We've launched a blog at acogblog.wordpress.com, where we will bring you weekly updates on items of interest at ACOG and around Central Oklahoma.  Our Flip video camera has been put to good use and we are starting to feature more video content.

Unlike our monthly e-newsletter, Central Oklahoma Perspective, we hope that this venue gives us the opportunity to provide real time, breaking news and casual and fun observations. If you subscribe to our blog alerts, you will be emailed every time we make an update.

The 9-1-1 Division has also launched a blog devoted to 9-1-1 and public safety news and information.

Also, don't forget to follow us on Twitter, "like" us on Facebook, or join our monthly eNews network.  We have a growing network in new media for many or our programs and we post information daily to stay active and informed.

Hoe-Down Showdown in OKC
Mayors from over 36 states across the United States converged on the region to participate in the 78th Annual U.S. Conference of Mayors. Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett will served as the primary host, as the conference was his big get when he started sitting on the Executive Committee a few years ago. Edmond Mayor Patrice Douglas and Moore's Glenn Lewis were among the Central Oklahoma participants who attended the Conference.

The mayors, their staff members and families enjoyed a weekend of forums and evening events.  Some of the agenda topics included the economy, job creation and economic development, immigration, energy efficiency, the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the growing number of vacant and abandoned properties in America's cities, high speed rail and education reform.

Evening entertainment included the deadCENTER Film Festival, an Oklahoma City RedHawks game, a genuine Southern Plains Hoe Down, multiple parties and functions and a Sunday night, first-ever performance of the Flaming Lips with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic.

Changing the world, one light at a time
Those "swirly bulbs" that look like a pig's tail have moved beyond novelty. When we hand these out at public events, people come clamoring for them as if we were handing out candy. A compact fluorescent light (CFL) that emits 60 watts (equivalent) of light, operates on 13 watts of actual electricity and don't emit the heat that a regular incandescent bulb produces, so they are great for small rooms.

Using less electricity at home means that less electricity is produced at the power plant, which ultimately reduces emissions. Fewer emissions at the point source helps promote clean air, and clean air is something that we should never take for granted.

A few years ago, we became a pledge leader trying to get folks to make the switch to CFLs. The energy efficiency movement has expanded beyond bulbs, and has opened up to other products, such as appliances and home improvement initiatives.

We ask that you join us in the ENERGY STAR Change the World Campaign as part of our commitment to keeping our air clean in Central Oklahoma. Our goal is to encourage individuals, organizations and businesses in Central Oklahoma to help prevent 1,068,000 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions. With your involvement, we can make this happen.

Have a business or agency in Central Oklahoma that would like to participate? Sign up under our umbrella, the ACOG Clean Air Committee.  Simply select our umbrella name from the pledge driver registration form.

Your pledges will help us meet regional goals to reduce emissions!

ACOG promotes clean air throughout the year.  Visit the clean air website at www.GetSquare.org, and the regional rideshare program at www.GetAroundOK.com today.
