Did someone say "Walk?"
Do you look forward to going for a walk with your dog or is it a dreaded chore? Great dogs and great relationships are made, not born. Dogs that pull and lunge while on leash need training to become an enjoyable member of your family.
Did you know that the Humane Society offers ongoing training classes to help you teach your dog to become the well-behaved friend that we all want? Contact us at 301-645-8181 or contact trainer Diana Miller at 240-350-9192 or www.dianaspetcare.com.
A few hours spent training will ensure years of happy companionship.
The time to start is now!
Sincerely,
Jean Stuller

Chewbacca's Story
Chewbacca (Chewy) was
adopted by the Cage Family in May. Stacy Cage is our Director of Humane Education and her daughter, Sammi, also works at the Humane Society. Everyone in their household (except for Dad) was feeling the need to have another dog in their life. They had watched many dogs come and go through the shelter but still could not convince him that these would fit into their home. In March, a six month old Westie-mix came through that they just could not get off their minds. However, Dad was still not convinced and the Westie mix (Chewy) was adopted by another family. The Cage Family continued to talk about him almost every day house for several weeks. Finally, Dad realized that if they were to have another dog that one would have been the one. They missed out! However, fate intervened, and as if it were meant to be, Chewy was brought back by the adopters because they didn't have the time that a young dog needs. The Cage Family immediately knew Chewy was meant for them and he went home with them that same day. Chewy has been in his new home for two months now and is the prime example of a puppy in training. When he first came home, he was obsessed with rocks. He would dig them up and push them until his nose was injured. In addition to that, he was not potty trained or trained in any manner. His manners were deplorable and he would not walk on a leash. However, The Cage Family is committed and is working vigorously with Chewy to help him understand his role in their family. He now leaves rocks alone when told, sits, stays, lays and is working hard on potty training and leash walking. He will even find their youngest daughter when asked where she is. They say that Chewy's successes are because of the great training class they took with Diana at The Humane Society of Charles County. The rewards outweigh the efforts many times over and they look forward to many wonderful years with Chewbacca (Chewy). |

Bark in the Park
Bark in the Park is just two months away and the animals of Southern Maryland NEED your help! For the first time ever, we're launching an online fundraising campaign. No paper pledge sheets to carry around with you...just take a few minutes to send an email to your friends, coworkers, neighbors, sports teams, scout groups, and family and forward our Bark in the Park fundraising link ( www.firstgiving.com/BIP)!
Every dollar donated makes a big difference and allows us to continue our vital community programs.
For instance, this past Sunday we held our monthly rabies clinic. Hundreds of people waited in line for hours to get low cost vaccinations and microchips. This happens every month, so why am I bringing it up? The skies opened up and it rained. But the crowd did not disperse. So let me ask you, under what circumstances would you stand in the rain for hours?
Spread the word: The only way we can adopt more pets and thrive as an animal shelter is through the generous support of community members like you. Here's a sampling of what your pledges will help with: · $20 will feed a litter of five infant kittens for a week · $30 will buy two 50lb. bags of quality dog food or four 25lb. bags of cat food · $50 will cover the cost of spaying or neutering of a dog or cat before adoption · $75 will cover our utility bills for 1 1/2 days · $100 will cover the cost of vaccines, heartworm, or leukemia testing and micro-chipping, as well as spaying and neutering before adoption If you're going to set up your team fundraising page, now is the time! To get started, click here: www.firstgiving.com/BIP If you're not going to set up a team fundraising page: Donating is REALLY easy and totally secure. And please forward our link: www.firstgiving.com/BIP to everyone you know. The Humane Society of Charles County is an independent shelter that has been proudly serving Southern Maryland since 1978. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit funded by donations and grants. We receive no support from national humane associations. Donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.
