Tomorrow, Saturday April 17th, the Rev. Ian Douglas will become Bishop Ian Douglas. As bishop of Connecticut he also becomes an ex-officio member of SIM's Board of Directors along with our other ex-officio board member, the Most Rev. Katharine Jefforts Schori. Ex-officio simply means "by virtue of position." Our bylaws call for the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church and the Bishop of Connecticut to be honorary board members.
Bishop-elect Douglas knows well the requisite path of SIM's clientele: Episcopal seminarians. As the Angus Dun Professor of Mission and World Christianity at the Episcopal Divinity School (EDS) since 1989, he has dedicated much of his vocation to a mission just like SIM's: investing in future ordained leaders to serve the Episcopal Church.
Investing in future ordained leaders in the Episcopal Church has resulted in an enviable SIM track record. Over 27% of bishops in the Episcopal Church received SIM scholarships. Currently, 20% of seminary deans and 24% of cathedral deans were SIM grant recipients. Approximately 2500 Episcopal priests across the nation are SIM alumni.
SIM's alumni even include a martyr, Jonathan Myrick Daniels, an Episcopal Theological School (EDS today) seminarian, who was killed for his work in the American civil rights movement in 1965. Jonathan's feast day, found on page 331 in Lesser Feasts and Fasts, is August 14 in the Episcopal Church's calendar of saints.
Like SIM, Bishop-elect Douglas is likely pleased with his role in shaping the Church's future. We are delighted that our newest board member joins SIM with intimate familiarity with our mission that has not wavered since 1857--to "aid suitable persons for the Episcopal ministry in acquiring a thorough education."
Please take the opportunity to SIM Boldly and be an investor in future ordained leaders of the Episcopal Church.
Faithfully,
Tom Moore Executive Director SIM
