1 for 50 E-blast                                 June 2011

Greetings!

"I'm not going to give up; I'm going to keep praying for my dad and God's going to change his heart."

These words were spoken by a merchant's son who had just learned about Jesus at a Kids Festival put on by a partnership of newly-trained children's leaders in a large Middle Eastern country. The message of Jesus had touched his heart: the boy was eager to share this good news with his father, a dishones
t businessman.

The Kids Festival started after

40 leaders-in-training from a variety of backgrounds were encouraged to map out the needs of the children in their community. After seeing the strong need to reach children, they decided to bring kids outside of the Islamic influence of the local villages and invite them to a neutral location to share the gospel. Each leader invited 10-12 unreached kids from these villages to attend the day long festival, which featured games, drama, music, food and most of all, the story of God's love and salvation for them.

After the event, leaders estimated that about half the children accepted Christ! The local leaders are now making a point of going out into the communities and following up with the new believers, offering discipleship as children begin their lives with Jesus. They are also visiting the children that did not give their hearts to Christ that day, giving those boys and girls a chance to ask the leaders more questions, and giving the leaders more opportunities to share the gospel.

Equipping local people to reach children in their own communities. This is what 1 for 50 is all about.

Key Verse:

"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."

Nigeria: 1 for 50 had an exciting launch in February in

collaboration with a 4/14 national gathering, with nearly 200 leaders gathered from multiple denominations and groups. The unity was exciting - and the vision for children is exploding across this nation.

Egypt and PakistanWith so much unrest and

upheaval in the Arab world, initial 1 for 50 events were cancelled/postponed this spring in both Egypt and Pakistan. Pray for the children's leaders there who face great challenges. May they have wisdom to see new opportunities for children and families and to find God's way forward in the midst of these conflicts.

So many nations! At present, there are 25 national groups already active with 1 for 50. Another

55 nations have expressed interest and/or are in early stages of asking questions and finding others to work with. Pray for God's help to meet the challenges and to build healthy cooperation with each other.

Zip Code Challenge: In the US, a number of leaders are experimenting with the "Zip Code

Challenge" as an expression of 1 for 50 in North America. The focus is on helping local people reach local children. While the United States is supposedly a Christian nation, a majority of children still do not follow Christ.

New 1 for 50 projectsSeveral 1 for 50 participating groups are working on some amazing new

projects to share with the rest of the 1 for 50 network/community: a 1 for 50 certificate program, 1 for 50 video series online, and more. Contact us if you have other ideas or resources to share.

Website, resource sharing, etc: We are so excited about all the progress with 1 for 50 since

September. But there is so much more to do! Teams are currently working to update the website with more resources, ideas, information, and create stronger links to other online forums (Max7.org), etc. Let us know if you have time, ideas, or content to share so we can collect a great library of training and children's discipleship materials.

(Download a printable version of this training activity here.)

10-15 minutes

Materials:  - 4 chairs

                   - A few small items (keys, pens, clips, etc.) to

be placed on one of the chairs

Scripture:

       - 1 Peter 4:10

Activity Instructions:

Invite nine participants to volunteer for this activity. They are divided into three teams with three members in each team. Each of the teams stands beside one of the three chairs, each placed about 5 feet away from a center chair. This center chair will contain about 10 items that are common and readily available in the room like keys, pencils, pens, pins etc. Then the teams are given the following instructions together:

1. "Transfer all the items to one chair"

2. "Transfer all the items one at a time"

3. "You may steal from each other's chair"

4. "You cannot stop anyone from stealing from your chair"

Let the game begin. Teams will likely rush to the center chair and attempt to transfer all the items to their respective chairs. After about 30 seconds of play stop the game and ask each team to count the number of items on their respective chair. Stop the game as you see a stalemate.

Let the game resume. Invariably the same thing will happen for several rounds. If they don't make any progress after three attempts then ask them to listen carefully to the instructions and repeat them once again in the correct order and very slowly. At this time one (or more) persons will get a clue (and may even pass it on to others) that you had asked them to transfer the items to ONE chair. The game is over when all the items are transferred to just one chair - it does not matter which chair!

Debrief questions:

1. What did we learn from this activity?

2. Which team won the game?

3. Why did it take so long (if it took several attempts) to win?

4. What does the Bible say about some of the things we learned?

Now, let's consider some principles learned that will help us as we consider working together to reach children and build the kingdom. Share answers.

1. In what ways was the playing of this game similar to the way we work together in building the Kingdom?

2. How can we do things differently so as to ensure that we're building ONE KINGDOM and not several kingdoms?

If the following points of learning are not mentioned by the group you could mention them yourself:

· Initiative - someone got the idea of working together and shared it with others

· Communication - if the idea of partnership was not shared it would have been of no use

· Individuals sacrificed for the common good

· Trust - trust was required to accept the idea of partnership

· Shared vision - if any person did not accept the main idea of the game, it could not have been completed.

· Unity - this was a prerequisite for working together.

Why is working together and partnership especially important as we work with children outside the church? Listen to several answers from the group. Remember, the world will know we are Jesus disciples by our love for one another (not our fancy programs, wonderful preaching, great gifts for children, etc.)

Conclusion

The 1 for 50 vision is that EVERY child in EVERY community around the world would have someone who can help them know and follow Jesus for a lifetime. It is a God-sized vision for a God-sized task. We must work together.
