Successful College Parenting Strategies

When you are more successful in your parenting your student is more successful in gaining skills for life! TM

Greetings!

I was watching the Olympic Trials and it was interesting to hear each athlete express that he or she always had "a dream to go to the Olympics." In hearing the qualifying athletes describe their journeys it is clear that the ability to vividly visualize one's dream, again and again, is primary to achieving success.  We also know that athletes regularly use visualization to mentally rehearse and to improve their skills.  So I wonder if what separates elite athletes is in part who has the greatest capacity to solidly visualize success?

How does any of this relate to our parenting?  When talking to your student about something he or she desires to pursue (study or travel abroad, a career or major, summer internship, an athletic or academic feat, etc.) consider the following questions to strengthen your student's ability to visualize his or her dream:

  1. What will it feel like when you...?
  2. Tell me more about ...
  3. Describe the steps you think you'll need to take to...
  4. Who else can support your dream?
  5. What is your best quality that will help you pursue your dream?

Whether holding the dream of being an elite athlete or getting a new job, thoughts guide actions and taking action brings one closer to realizing his or her dream.

"Visualization is daydreaming with a purpose." - Bo Bennett

This Month's Article:  A Day at the Beach

Beaches are wonderful places to observe people and to overhear all sorts of conversations.  I recently sat in front of a group of college students and next to a family with two children.

I was reminded about all the situations that college students have to navigate -- many of which will challenge their decision-making skills and how important it is to continue to provide opportunities for our sons and daughters to experience cause and effect.

Did You Know...Some Colleges Seek to Boost Hope

Delivering programs that are designed to boost hope have become a strategy for some colleges to help students to achieve and experience less anxiety.

"What universities traditionally do is a mistake. Instead of developing for [students'] sense of, what's your purpose in life and how are you going to achieve it, they just develop this big knowledge base.... The reason you lose a lot of kids is they kind of give up hope on themselves," said Robert J. Sternberg, a celebrated psychologist and provost and senior vice president at Oklahoma State.
