Successful College Parenting Strategies

When you are more successful in your parenting your student is more successful in gaining skills for life! TM

Greetings!

Kay Kimball Gruder
I was recently part of a very large group that was collectively contributing to a picnic that would feed around 75 people. Emails were flying fast and furious with people identifying that they were going to make brownies, pasta salad, mac 'n cheese, etc. There was one email that stood out. It said,

"Life is crazy right now I can't make anything.  Let me know if you need me to buy something."

I thought "Wow! How amazing that this woman expressed her true situation without apology," especially in a culture where it is common to keep doing and going as if one has unlimited reserves of emotional and physical energy.

As you might guess, there was an abundance of food -- we could have fed twice the number planned -- and my sense was that there were others who might have preferred to prepare something less elaborate or who would have been relieved to have chosen to pick something up at the store.

So the next time that "Life is crazy right now," consider what you might choose not to do.

All the best in your relationship with your student,  -Kay

This Month's Article:  Phrases for Your Parenting Toolbox

My daughter mouthed the words as I began to say them,

"Don't decide now how things are going to be later."

A mantra of sorts that effectively shifts her from deciding in the present how poorly she might do on a test next week, or how tough an opponent might be on the court a few days from now.  These same words have opened the door to conversations about how quickly situations and people can change, and the phrase has facilitated discussions about action steps that she might take now, instead of solely forecasting a future of doom and gloom.

Did You Know...How Long Does That Degree Really Take?

The "Pathways to Prosperity" study by the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 2011 states that "Only 56 percent of those enrolling in a four-year college attain a bachelor's degree after six years, and less than 30 percent of those who enroll in community college succeed in obtaining an associate's degree within three years."
