Successful College Parenting Strategies

When you are more successful in your parenting your student is more successful in gaining skills for life! TM

Greetings!

Kay Kimball GruderApril is a month where we typically
find ourselves talking with others about the plans our children have for the summer or even life after graduation.  In conversation we might express a combination of joy and angst -- happy for their return and perhaps also concerned about the upcoming transitions for the family.  For many of us things seem rather up in the air!

A friend of mine once said when my stepson's summer plans were changing as rapidly as the second hand on a clock, "You can look at all these transitions as challenges or annoyances -- or  you can look at them as if they are a second chance to try a different approach, to consider a different mindset, to prepare and communicate better, to react less, and to be more effective."  It is her advice that I call upon throughout the month of April.  The one thing we can always change is how we look at the uncertainties before us.

All the best in your relationship with your student,  -Kay

I believe it is human nature to be curious about our experiences -- to learn whether they are unique to us or to find relief in knowing we aren't the only one!

As you might imagine, my clients often ask me "Do you see this a lot?"  So this month I decided to share what I encounter, and observe the most, in my work and travels as a parent coach and parent educator.

Read more and learn about the patterns I see and reflect on whether anything rings true to you and your parenting.

"Teens and young adults brought up from childhood with a continuous connection to each other and to information will be nimble, quick-acting multitaskers who count on the Internet as their external brain and who approach problems in a different way from their elders, according to a new survey of technology experts...  but the experts in this survey also predicted this generation will exhibit a thirst for instant gratification and quick fixes, a loss of patience, and a lack of deep-thinking ability due to what one referred to as 'fast-twitch wiring'."
