The Celebration Continues!
CAFES' centennial year of celebration continues into the fall with the "Birthday" celebration and more alumni gatherings, including Homecoming 2012! We will continue to send you this special bi-monthly "Centennial Series" FenceLine through April 2013. Below you will find summaries and photos from our June and July events as well as an overview of those scheduled into early October. We hope you'll join us! View All Centennial Events
Wisconsin State FFA Convention Alumni Reception
This was the first formal alumni gathering at the State FFA convention, but won't be the last! Approximately 50 alumni joined us for refreshments on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 13th. We heard many comments that "we should do this again" and we will - next year!
A small group braved the 100 degree heat in Melrose on July 4th to join in the holiday hometown parade. A big thanks to Tom Pfaff '59 for using his International 656 to pull the float.
River Falls Days Parade
If you were there Friday evening, July 13th you saw the CAFES float in the River Falls Days parade accompanied by Freddy the Falcon (aka Professor Peter Rayne!). Despite the 30 minute rain delay, crowds still lined the streets and everyone enjoyed themselves.
Wisconsin Farm Technology Days
Despite some weather "events" Farm Technology Days in Outagamie County went on as planned. Over the course of the three day event, over 70 alumni stopped by our booth or the Alumni Tent. An abbreviated history display (1960s - 2000s) debuted at the Alumni Tent and helped spur some reminiscing among the alumni. Our booth give-away item - cow, corn and tractor shaped pens were a huge hit.
Regional Alumni Rendezvous
On the evening of July 18th alumni from the greater Appleton area joined us for dinner on the Fox Valley Technical College campus. The group spanned the decades from the 1950s -2000s. Ollie Lerum '50 shared some stories from his breakfast club, a group of retired ag educators that gets together quarterly. Thanks to Randy Tenpas '81, Chair of the Agriculture Department at FVTC for graciously hosting this event.
|Centennial Scavenger Hunt
During the month of July we invited anyone on campus to take part in our Centennial Scavenger Hunt. A dozen people took us up on our offer. Megan Learman who works in the Global Connections office on campus was the grand prize winner! Here's one of the web-based questions for you
: A dairy industry executive from Genex Cooperative, Inc. participated in the new promotional video for the dairy science program featured on the program website. What is his name?
Centennial Courtyard
Construction started on the Courtyard! A crew from Facilities removed overgrown and problem trees and the digging began. The loop walkway and retaining wall are now in. The faculty and staff working group is now reviewing the plans to decide what and where to begin with the plantings. Watch for updates this fall and information on the dedication of the space this coming spring.
Alumni gathering at the Steele County Free Fair (August 18)
All alumni in southern Minnesota are invited to join us for an informal gathering at the Steele County Free Fair in Owatonna, on Saturday, July 18th. We're gathering in the beer garden between 2 and 4 pm. Bring the family to the fair and while they are on the Midway rides, join us for some refreshments.
