UWRF Continues Strong Tradition of Success in the Sciences
UWRF has been accepted into the prestigious Howard Hughes Medical Institute's (HHMI) Science Education Alliance. UWRF is one of 12 universities joining the Alliance this year to work on the National Genomics Research Initiative. As a member of the Alliance, faculty and undergraduate students in the department of biology will participate in a three-year national phage genomics research project in conjunction with faculty and students at 35 colleges and universities around the country.
"This is an incredible opportunity to provide authentic research experience for biology students early in their career," said biology Professor Karen Klyczek.
She and Kim Mogen, professor of biology, will jointly oversee the project in the coming academic year.
"UWRF's membership in the National Genomics Research Initiative exemplifies the institution's achievement in undergraduate science education," Terry Brown, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, said.
The overarching goal of the Alliance is to assist forward-thinking and innovative science programs for undergraduates that encourage research as a career. Participating schools such as UWRF are selected through national competitions.
