First Falcon Athletic Number Retired

Former Falcon football great Jim (Cubby) Baier's No. 33 jersey was officially retired Sept. 5 at the Falcon vs. St. John's game at Ramer Field. His jersey is the first Falcon athletic number ever retired. Baier led the country in rushing in 1966 when he gained 1,585 yards and he was named to the first NAIA All-America team. He holds several UWRF records; most yards rushing in a game (370 vs. Stevens Point, 1966); most touchdowns scored in a season (17, 1966); most points scored in a season (102, 1966) and longest run from scrimmage (95-yards vs. Stevens Point, 1966). He was inducted into the UWRF Athletic Hall of Fame in 1977. In 1965 and 1966, Baier was named the team's Offensive Player of the Year and received the Most Valuable Player award. From left to right are teammates Carlos Kreibich, '71 and Tom Carroll, '70; Jim Baier; Coach Gwynn Christensen; teammates Ulf Johanson, '70 and Duane Johnson, '66.
Success Story
Oct 09 Molly Rhoads
Racecar Driver Rolls for Raptors

Alumna and pro stockcar driver Molly Rhoads competed in the celebrity portion of the Raptor Bowl July 15 in Minneapolis. Proceeds benefited The Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota. She was invited by former Minnesota Vikings All-Pro Linebacker and Event Director Matt Blair to join the U.S. Olympic Curling team and other celebrities, including former Vikings, Twins and Wild players, to compete. Rhoads, who races in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series in the Super Late Model Division in Minnesota and Wisconsin, teamed up with former Minnesota Wild Defenseman Brad Bombardir, U.S. Curling Team member Jason Smith, and Vikings mascot Viktor. Molly is a 2004 alum with an animal science degree. Twin sister Megan, '04, is a member of Rhoads' pit crew.

Pepfest 2009
Three Cheers for the New Falcon Pep Fest

Falcon Pep Fest premiered Aug. 29 at Ramer Field as 1,300 new students were greeted by UWRF  athletes, Weeks of Welcome leaders, and resident assistants. Student leaders distributed Falcon Pride T-shirts and noise-makers while cheering and welcoming the students to campus. Chancellor Dean Van Galen, River Falls Mayor Don Richards, Athletic Director Rick Bowen and Freddy Falcon raced  into the stadium on golf carts, providing a warm and humorous welcome. The night continued with UWRF Athletics introductions and the singing of the Falcon Fight Song, with more than 1,300 people joining in! The night concluded with a fireworks display sponsored by First National Bank of River Falls and Sodexo, two partners contributing to the fun evening. Look for Pep Fest again next fall.

Calming Parents' Preschool Jitters

University Preschool Director Angela Kaiser shares words of wisdom with parents of preschoolers in the September 2009 issue of Parents magazine.

Angela's one-page letter, "A Teacher's Welcome," on page 150, offers advice and guidance to quell parents' concerns as to what to expect during their child's first day of preschool: "It's normal to be nervous as you send your little one out into the world. But remember: You are giving your child a gift by teaching independence ... Finally, please trust me. I have your child's best interests in mind when I plan each day. I know that I'm teaching important life skills, and although it's unlikely your children will remember me, I will always remember them. Each child makes a lasting impression and stays forever in my heart."
