"Do I Need to File a Tax Return This Year?"

There are several reasons why you should file even if you don't think you have to do so.  Our TCE program is here to prepare tax returns for low-income seniors at sites throughout the county.     For more info please click the link below.  You may also contact Sarah Guzman, our TCE Program Coordinator.

Aging at The Movies

"Old age ain't for sissies," according to 1950's era movie star Bette Davis.  Join in the conversation as we watch and discuss how successfully the issues of aging are addressed by film characters.

We will have a free six-part series hosted by Peer Counselor Marge Simmons at the Sally Griffin Active Living Center.

Faced with Long-Term Care Placement Decisions?

Most of us have some knowledge or distant experience with a long-term care facility, but not enough to be comfortable in making a placement decision.  If you are faced with considering placement of a loved one in a long-term care facility, the Ombudsman Program can help.

What are differences between assisted living, board & care and skilled nursing homes?  Does Medicare pay for this?  For the answers to these questions and many more, contact the Ombudsman staff, who can assist you in providing information, consultation, and guidance.  For further information and/or a list of facilities in our area, please call us at 831.646.1458 or from the Salinas area: 831.758.4011 and ask for the Ombudsman.

Medicare Part D Enrollment a Big Success!

The Health Insurance Counseling & Advocacy Program (HICAP) has concluded helping Medicare beneficiaries through the Annual Election Period.  We assisted over 575 clients in evaluating their drug coverage options for 2012.  It is very gratifying to know that this service acted as a guiding light to less expensive alternative insurances for a potential saving of $650,000.  We were able to respond to the request of all Medicare beneficiaries who contacted our office thanks to the help of our invaluable Medicare Counselors.  A hearty note of appreciation to our team: Sally Hodge, Maria Bennett-Schafer, Paul Best, Lyle Brumfield, Larry Durocher, Larry Horan, Vic Johnson and Bill Roth.  As a result of their efforts and dedication to helping others, HICAP excelled during this very busy season.

You May Be Eligible for Benefits Assistance

Washington, D.C. - The National Council on Aging (NCOA) is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of its free, online screening service BenefitsCheckUp®, which has identified more than $10 billion in benefits for over 3 million vulnerable older adults since 2001.

Developed and maintained by the NCOA, BenefitsCheckUp® is the nation's most comprehensive web based service to screen for benefits programs for seniors with limited income and resources.  It includes almost 2,000 public and private benefits programs from all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Using a simple survey, BenefitsCheckUp® screens individuals for benefits that can help them pay for food, medicine, health care, utilities, rent and more.  It also gives users the information and steps they need to apply for benefits.  For more information, visit www.BenefitsCheckUp.org

What's New in Development?

My thoughts about last year are surrounded by the word "grateful".  I'm grateful for your continued support, to have met so many wonderful Alliance on Aging supporters and to have heard wonderful recounts of positive experiences with AoA.  Thank you to all who have been so generous in spirit and giving.  My new challenges for 2012 are to meet more of you; hear more of your stores; and continue to be grateful for all you do to support us.  Until then, thank you for your needed, generous support of Alliance on Aging.

This year, we will be starting a campaign to encourage consideration of providing for AoA in your estate plan.  While this may sound ominous, we will help step-by-step.  When you make a bequest to Alliance on Aging, you are not only creating a legacy for the well-being of an excellent individual program, but also contributing to the greater good of our community.  By including AoA in your estate preparations, you will be providing continued support for a program in which you believe.  We will have seminars and provide information to you later in this year.

For questions and inquiries regarding donating please email our Development Director, Michelle Noseworthy
or you may call her at 831.655.4243.
