Nonprofit Mergers: The New Collaboration Strategy

Starting a nonprofit program from scratch can be an extremely challenging endeavor. Before jumping all in, be sure you understand how much sweat equity, volunteer support, and start up capital you will need to develop a successful program.

In the current economic climate, new, as well as existing programs may want to explore merging, or combining resources. Outsourcing is not a traditional workforce method in the nonprofit sector. However, as times and conditions change, so must outdated, underperforming nonprofit business models.

Although mergers are more commonly used in the for profit sector, such collaborations can create opportunities whereby two or more nonprofit companies can share resources, save money, and increase productivity. Increasing numbers of grant makers are suggesting such collaborations. Some are even requiring them.

So, to those thinking of new ways to enter the charitable sector, consider partnering with an organization that is already established. Create a product that they can't refuse; that is a win/win for you, them, and the client.
