Fundraising for Early Childhood Education: Tips from Local Players

I had the pleasure of attending the Foundation Center Atlanta's training "Early Childhood Education: Making a Big Impact on Little Learners", which took place Wednesday, June 24, 2009. The guest presenters held positions with Southern Education Foundation and SunTrust Bank, who provided helpful tips on how nonprofit organizations can improve their grant proposal writing and general fundraising performance.

For nonprofit early childhood providers preparing grant applications, the Southern Education Foundation's website, www.secf.org, publishes valuable research reports and statistical data that can be used to create a strong case for support. Other proposal writing and fundraising tips, as suggested by Catherine Covington of SunTrust's Program Office, included:
  • Convey passion through your written proposals;
  • Make sure everyone (board and staff) is telling the same story;
  • Use your board's connections (this was one of the most important suggestions);
  • Have a wide donor base; and
  • Include a list of board members in margin of letterhead.
