What could be more precious than someone's future?
At five years old, Joe is a self proclaimed "motor mouth" and is quick to tell you a joke, or about his favorite truck. He is especially proud of his most recent achievement, reciting the alphabet! But just four months ago, Joe didn't talk at all. He was diagnosed with autism and retreating into his own world.
The Arc was able to help Joe's family afford to send him to preschool in September. "Joe is a different child. We can't thank The Arc enough for the opportunity to send him to this program. His ability to contribute to and be a part of his community when he gets older increases each day he attends school" claims his mom.
Maria and her husband adopted Sarah, a 15 year old who has brittle bone disease and is a quadriplegic. When Maria's husband died suddenly, she and Sarah were left to fend for themselves. Although there is social security money coming in, it isn't enough to support all of the medicine, therapy and assistance that Sarah needs to stay at home with her mom.
The Arc was able to provide Maria with respite care for Sarah, as well as reimburse her for medical bills and therapy costs. This allows Maria to work part-time, and keep Sarah home with her. "The Arc kept my family together and is helping me to provide for my daughter's future."
Unfortunately, programs that allow us to help families like Joe's and Sarah's have been critically cut. And we are expecting another round of cuts in the near future.
We need your help to continue our work. The budget cuts that have come from the State are truly affecting our ability to provide help to the neediest of families. There is a stack of requests for assistance that we can't fulfill because of these budget cuts.
The future of the individuals we serve is currently in jeopardy. We will do everything within our power to raise more money, advocate against more budget cuts, and rally for the rights of all individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
