A Note From Wendy

Greetings! ,

Happy Holidays to all my readers!

It is hard to imagine that this year has slipped by so quickly, or so it seems. Here we sit, just 10 days until a brand new year and I find myself reflecting about this past year.  Wendy Xmas

I am grateful for all that I have been able to create and take action on. I have had the opportunity to help numerous business owners move closer to reaching their goals, gain clarity about their market position, and best of all, claim their own radiance-- allowing it to shine through in their relationships with their clients.

It is my belief businesses built from the inside out and which showcase the loves, interests, and greatest skill sets of their owners serve people at a higher level -especially those people they can truly help. In many cases, people start out in business for themselves in order to have more control in the way they work; however, infusing a business with a personal mission offers a totally new level of play.

When I shifted my business into a consulting and coaching practice this past February-yes, that is only how long ago I restructured my business--I decided to make my personal mission the foundation of my business efforts. I am glad I did, too, as this became the most rewarding year I have ever had in business. With each "risk" I took, I was backed by the faith that this would work as I walked to my "own edge" and stepped off!

Now I understand how I can show so many of you how to do the same, as well. So get ready for some very exciting coaching opportunities next year where I am going to leverage this amazing knowledge into special programs--just for you!

But for now, in this final edition of On the Edge for 2009, I have written an article to help get you closer to this idea. In Reset Your Mission and Business for 2010 Success I share what I see as an essential point in establishing your business goals for the New Year. As you prepare and plan for next year, take these points into consideration and make sure you take a few minutes to work through the Radiant Actions Steps at the end.

If you are ready to kick off 2010 in a big way, then make sure that you plan to join me on January 18, for another small business focus group session hosted by me and Kwik Focus. I will send more information out in the beginning of January to remind you again, as well.

Finally, I want to thank all the Radiant Women who made it out to my Radiant Women Holiday party-in spite of the snow! (The snow just made everything feel more festive.) As promised, I have shared the special drink recipe for the Candy Cane Martinis below-- they definitely were the hit of the party!

Now I want to welcome all the new readers who have joined my list in the past month from the many networking groups I have attended and from the guest speaking spot I had at the Valley Women's Network, Evening chapter.

I wish all of you the very best during the holidays.
Radiantly Yours,

articleReset Your Mission and Business for 2010 Success!
 by Wendy Burge

Call it conditioning, but what I like the most about ending another year is the opportunity a New Year represents. Typically in business it is the time to initiate a new series of goals, to kick off the first of four quarters, and to strive for another level of pre-determined success. Best of all, I see it also as a good time to assess if all of my effort is still in alignment with my business mission.

Traditionally in business, mission statements guide the purpose and efforts of the business. This is incredibly powerful for an owner, because it gives all those involved in the business, from employees to customers, a greater understanding of the intangible structure that supports the intention of a business in the first place.

While missions are valuable for larger companies in rallying the troops, if you will, they are even more important, I believe, for a solo-entrepreneur or small business owner who may only have part-time support. The fact that the responsibility of the operations is still run by you, the entrepreneur with multiple hats, claiming your mission really provides structure for how to support your efforts, clearly, all the while still rallying your own entrepreneurial spirit.

The undeniable thing about being an entrepreneur is that change is ever present in your life. Those of us who have been in business for ourselves understand that the life of an entrepreneur is not one for the weak at heart.

Courage, risk, and growth are all a part of the entrepreneurial lifestyle. And, this is a most critical point to take into consideration when it comes to resetting your mission for the New Year.

The beauty of being an entrepreneurial business owner is that each year you are professionally growing, stretching, and taking on new challenges that push you into new territory personally. The things you are learning and experiencing further strengthen the work you are able to do and how you offer it. It can be empowering by building up self-esteem and confidence within one's self.

By taking account of this growth process, you are able to course correct your business growth to match your personal growth.  The reason in doing this is two-fold. First it allows you to continue to build on your expertise. Let us say, for example, you offer a licensed or certified, professional service.  To maintain your professional standing, you are required, annually, to take accredited courses for continued, professional development. In that one year, you will have gained further knowledge about how to continue providing better service to your clientele. This expands your expertise. Maybe initially when starting your business you tried to help everyone. However, over time your knowledge and understanding of the various aspects of your work and services you provide increase.  This exciting and interesting new growth may actually find you specializing your focus.

So for example, if you were a CGA setting up your own practice, initially, you maybe never turned away a client.  But, now, over the years, you find that you prefer to work only with small businesses that are newly incorporated. This specialty evolved out of personal interest and professional development. Now, this holds the key to creating a compelling mission statement which becomes the foundation for your business.

The thing I have seen happen the most to professional service providers is that often, as they grow professionally, their personal interests thrive too. However, they still have the same routines within their business, and, they feel disconnected and stuck because their business has not grown with them. They have not incorporated their personal growth and experiences with their professional practice. So, while their heart is expanding, their head is still stuck in the, "Well, this is just how it's done" mode.

Yes, there are still things that need to be handled the same way - those are called systems-and may be required by professional associations to maintain a consistency within their industry. But, it's the intention/reasons behind placement of those systems   where a business mission can play a greater role is establishing the unique position and direction a business will take.

This then brings us to my second point, assessing mission statements-essentially why you do what you do and how you are going to serve a specific type of client doing it. Clarifying this should be the starting point of setting New Year business goals in the first place. If part of someone's business mission is to serve a specific type of client, then their business goals for the New Year must be directed towards how they are going to do this. Mission statements establish the entrepreneurial WHY you want to do this initially. All growth, money, and expansion goals are supported by a common understanding that they are to support the greater mission. As, mission statements provide the soul to why you want to achieve them!

This clarity is incredibly important for solo-entrepreneurs in order to ground themselves for the challenging days ahead-which they will encounter and for which they will need a greater WHY to keep them going all year long.

Radiant Actions to Take:

With the opportunity of starting a New Year just around the corner, begin by asking yourself this question, "Is your business growing with you?"

Consider all your professional development you have learned, developed, or have become interested in this past year which will help you serve your clients better.

·         How can this knowledge expand the way you work with them?
·         What kinds of new goals can you create that support this new position you want to take?
·         Who specifically can you now serve well if they were your clients?
·         What new features and benefits can you offer because of your expanding expertise?

Write out these answers and see where you can begin to pull together a mission that strengthens the purpose you feel you are personally here to serve on a greater level through your business.  Take this new mission and now create goals that will align your business with the things you love about the work you do and how you want to do it!

Happy New Year to All You Radiant Entrepreneurs!

MarketingTip5 Great Ways to Profit from Writing
Woman headset
People may not realize that writing is still an invaluable skill to utilize as a marketing tool. If you are confident in your writing skills then try incorporating more writing in your marketing strategies. Here are 5 ways to profit from writing.

1. Turn your ad into an article. It could be a story, or how-to article. This will lead readers into your ad without them knowing it's an ad. They'll already be interested when they get to your sales pitch. For example, you could start your ad, "Discover the best reasons to--" or "How to lose, gain, save, or increase--".

2. Personalize all your e-mail messages so they get read. Include the recipient's name in the subject line. This will grab people's attention quickly. For example, wouldn't starting with the reader's name "Wendy, Learn How To Save on Your Heating Costs" get their attention more than just "Learn How To--"?

3. Start an e-zine for your web site. When people read each issue they'll be reminded to revisit your web site. They'll see your product ad more than just once, which will increase your orders. You'll need to have original content in each addition so people don't unsubscribe along with your reoccurring ads.

4. Participate on message boards, forums & blogs. Post comments to other people's posts, ask questions, and post appropriate information. Include your signature file at the end of all your postings. Some message boards let you include a text link at the end of your message which you can tie into your website.

5. Offer a free e-course on your web site. Package topic specific content into a course set up on an autoresponder--pre-set messages that are scheduled to be sent at specific times. Include your ads for a service you offer that is related to your topic at the end of each lesson.

Biz Building Resources

Resources I have selected some really valuable business building tools every small business needs to know about!

There are many great web-based software programs on line to help assist businesses these days. These are a few I often share with clients and use my self.
woman on computer

1. Mozy.com - This is the best online data backup system! (It's a MUST to have a web-based backup system because you KNOW you won't do it manually yourself often enough! Plus best of all your information is always accessible at anytime online - just in case!)
2. 1ShoppingCart.com - The most used resource for online ecommerce, auto-responders, affiliate program, email marketing and more if you want to sell items for your business online--all of my colleagues and mentors use it--and me too soon!
3. ConstantContact.com - This is the email marketing program I use and you're reading right now. I recommend it if you don't have an email marketing system or shopping cart system that does this for you. It offers some great features like email archiving, survey options, and auto-responder options.
4. AudioGenerator.com - This is the easiest way to add audio to websites and emails! Set up your account, call in to activate the reording, and receive the audio formatted in html code for your website plus it gives you play buttons, etc. to put on your site.
5.
PracticePaySolutions.com - This is a merchant services payment processing company most recommended by my colleagues; it works well with 1shoppingcart.
6.
GoSolo.com - This is a great, inexpensive 800 phone system. I use this for my business and love that I can access my messages online. It sends me an email when someone leaves me a message. I then can log into my account to listen to it. Can't get any easier! It also offers fax, email, and web conference services as options to their packages.
7. Ning.com - This site allows you to create your own F*R*E*E social network! Do you have a select group of client programs, services, or a special interest you want to share about your business? You can create your own personal group for it and your members can talk to each other and share ideas.
8. InstantConference.com - This is a F*R*E*E conference line solution for teleclasses or recording calls of any sort. I use it and love that I can record my calls on my own private number with access code as well. Within three hours of the end of my call they email me links to my recording in an MP3 format!
9. Dreamstime.com - Is an inexpensive photo and art site where you can get images for your website or ezines. They offer a really good selection too.
10.
Wordpress.com - Have you wanted to start your own blog? This is the site to do it in. Wordpress is easy to start up, they have several template styles, and it is user-friendly. I use it for both my Radiant Edge blog and Radiant Business Marketing Articles blog.
11. Vistaprint.com - This is a digital web-based printing company. It offers tons of template options for business cards, brochures, postcards and more. They have SUPER promos - so make sure you get signed up on their email list. Make sure you click on your country's flag to get accurate pricing although.
12. Cafepress.com - This site is another digital printing site that allows you to set up your own online retail store. I use this site to create my own promotional items that I can purchase from myself at a great deal and or sell; like T-shirts, mugs, and tote bags all emblazoned with my logo.
