| A Note From Wendy
|
|
Greetings! ,
I have been spending quiet a bit of time lately looking over the structure of my business. It is interesting because as I continue to develop my brand I realize I have to be open to addressing those issues that I see hold me back from taking that step to the next level of business growth.
I have always found it interesting that for small business entrepreneurs our businesses become an extension of our inner workings.
Think about it. Are you a really creative person? What about a neat and organized person? Do you like numbers, figures, and stats? Are you a great people person? I bet what ever it is you enjoy the most is where you prefer to spend your time in your business.

Here I am speaking with a client in my office.
For me, well that is easy, I love writing, marketing, and building great relationships with clients and colleagues. Regardless, not all the tasks in my business are things I enjoy, but are definitely necessary to being profitable.
Initially, my downfall at times was that I would put off those activities needed for the growth of my business. I have learned if I do not consciously make the effort to build in certain check and balance systems to make sure I am handling things efficiently I know I will not do them. Call it human nature.
What motivates me to keep the wheels well-oiled and functioning in my business is my bigger vision--my WHY. I want to help more people find their way to their own radiant business experience by showing them how to craft their purposeful messages of service in order to help those who need them the most. I am passionate about coaching out these marketing missions.
In today's issue I wanted to explore the need for holding a greater purpose for your business so that it actually pulls you along the way too. My article called, Are You in Love with Your Business? is intended to help you find your larger purpose in your business. If you are having trouble uncovering this aspect of your business then you will want to join me for a VERY SPECIAL coaching opportunity with a venture I have created between Radiant Edge Consulting and the founders of Kwik Focus - a small business focus group exclusively for owners. Are You In Love With Your Business?
by Wendy Burge
The other day I was speaking with a small business owner and they were sharing with me the struggles they were having in their business. "I really like the clients I have, but I hate all the paperwork I have to do to keep my businesses operational, you know." Then, not surprisingly, the next thing this person talked about was how they struggled with procrastination around the essential tasks they needed to do. Worse than that, now, was that they had more on their plate to deal with because they had put everything off for so long. This isn't an uncommon story I hear. In fact, it is more of a red flag to a bigger issue. Curious, I asked them a few more questions and finally stated, "Are you in love with your business?" This person stopped, thought for a moment, and then conservatively answered, "Well, I like aspects of my business, and I guess to be honest, I spend time on the things I like doing, but I suppose I avoid a lot of the other things I don't. So, I guess, no, I don't take good care of my business; so maybe I really don't love my business." Herein lies a problem with many small business owners. They enjoy the relationships they have with their clients, contacts, and peers, but do not enjoy the relationship they have with their business itself. Truly it is a relationship--one that needs constant love and support, care and attention. Being in love with your business is like being in love with a person. You must be able to see a future with them, want to have specific experiences together, and be able to be your best self in the whole of it. Owning your own business cannot be just about work that makes you money. That thought would be as silly as saying you just want to get married because you want a spouse, kids, and a house-so you just marry anyone. There has to be something more to your business 'love story'. · Why was it you went into business for yourself? · What personal experience transformed your desire to go from being an employee to that of a business owner? · What did you want to accomplish through the vehicle of this business? · How can the success of your business push you into greater service to others or allow you to help more people?
"The 'love stories' about our businesses are just as essential as how we feel about the work we do."
Once we understand the real value our business hold for us, the tasks which seem challenging begin to disappear because they just become a part of the process to obtaining the bigger picture and bigger love affair we can have. What will it take for you to fall in love with your business? Business, like a good, healthy relationship, must allow us to be our radiant, best selves. If there are tasks you do not care for that take away your shine, for example bookkeeping, then out source it for someone else to handle so you can continue to do what you love. You will make the money up three-fold because you took a task away that potentially could sabotage the love for your business. An aspect to falling out of love with your business is that, just like in some relationships, we put a lot of time and energy into them; however, we experience very little reward back. If you have been working hard and have not set up a personal business budget that incorporates paying yourself first, then your business will feel more like a drain than a joy. Get realistic with your numbers and see what it would take for you to create that salary you desire, budget for expenses, and still have extra in bank for those experiences like seminars, workshops, and professional development that would move you into an even bigger love affair. How we view our business will exponentially create or break our success! Stop today and decide why you love your business, and, then, take one step forward to show you care by nurturing that relationship. © 2009 Wendy Burge - Radiant Edge Consulting. Become the Master of the Moment! - Simple Marketing Plan
When it comes to marketing it is important to become a master of the moment. Getting the information about your business, product or service in front of your customers at the right time, all the time, is critical.
For many small business owners this can be a challenge as time really passes quickly. Then all of a sudden that great idea to host a sale or promotion in honor of a holiday, anniversary, or any other important calendar date has come and gone with no possibility of capitalizing on it.
In order to make marketing work more effective review a 12 month calendar for significant holidays and special dates that are relevant to your industry. Mark them off as recognizable opportunities to generate a boost in cash flow. Now break the calendar into quarters and make a list of these dates, working backwards note the steps necessary to get your marketing in the hands of your customer weeks or days prior to that date.
Knowing your time frame now, it is important to include production and printing time frames as well postal delivery for any direct mailing. Email promotions often have the availability to be scheduled a head of time once layout edits are complete and can be automated.
Giving proper consideration to each project per quarter makes marketing doable when broken into time chunks. Furthermore, no more missed money making opportunities need happen because another month flew by without some marketing campagin in place. |

| Biz Building Resources
|
I have selected some really valuable business building tools every small business needs to know about!
There are many great web based software programs on line to help assist businesses these days. These are a few I often share with clients and use my self.
1. Mozy.com - This is the best online data backup system! (It's a MUST to have a web-based backup system because you KNOW you won't do it manually yourself often enough! Plus best of all your information is always accessible at anytime online - just in case!)
2. 1ShoppingCart.com - The most used resource for online ecommerce, auto-responders, affiliate program, email marketing and more if you want to sell items for your business online--all of my colleagues and mentors use it--and me too soon!
3. ConstantContact.com - This is the email marketing program I use and you're reading right now. I recommend it if you don't have an email marketing system or shopping cart system that does this for you. It offers some great features like email archiving, survey options, and auto-responder options.
4. AudioGenerator.com - This is the easiest way to add audio to websites and emails! Set up your account, call in to activate the reording, and receive the audio formatted in html code for your website plus it gives you play buttons, etc. to put on your site. 5. PracticePaySolutions.com - This is a merchant services payment processing company most recommended by my colleagues; it works well with 1shoppingcart. 6. GoSolo.com - This is a great, inexpensive 800 phone system. I use this for my business and love that I can access my messages online. It sends me an email when someone leaves me a message. I then can log into my account to listen to it. Can't get any easier! It also offers fax, email, and web conference services as options to their packages.
7. Ning.com - This site allows you to create your own F*R*E*E social network! Do you have a select group of client programs, services, or a special interest you want to share about your business? You can create your own personal group for it and your members can talk to each other and share ideas.
8. InstantConference.com - This is a F*R*E*E conference line solution for teleclasses or recording calls of any sort. I use it and love that I can record my calls on my own private number with access code as well. Within three hours of the end of my call they email me links to my recording in an MP3 format!
11. Vistaprint.com - This is a digital web-based printing company. It offers tons of template options for business cards, brochures, postcards and more. They have SUPER promos - so make sure you get signed up on their email list. Make sure you click on your country's flag to get accurate pricing although.
12. Cafepress.com - This site is another digital printing site that allows you to set up your own online retail store. I use this site to create my own promotional items that I can purchase from myself at a great deal and or sell; like T-shirts, mugs, and tote bags all emblazoned with my logo.
