| A Note From Wendy |
|
Greetings! ,
Welcome again to another edition of On the Edge!
As it seems, Wednesday gets here faster than I can keep up with some weeks--especially as this month is coming to an end and more activities with my boys start happening at school. There is always something on the calendar now.
This is one of the reasons I created my lifestyle business--to support my life. I enjoy being able to participate with my children at school and with their other activities. This ability to structure my business this way did not happen over night, although. It has been a process in the making for a number of years starting with my role I held within my wellness centre, that I own with my husband.
When I started out to create my consulting business about 18 months ago I wanted to have the same kind of flexibility. I have never been averse to working hard, but it does become a challenge when you have a structured day that dictates the hours you have to work versus the times you choose to work. This is often the down sound of having 'office hours'. However, building a business that leveraged the lifestyle items that I value is one of the many conscious choices I made to shift how I work.
This brings me to the topic I choose to write about this week called Creating a Radiant Business - Reflections from Within Yourself. As a "lifer" entrepreneur I have learned more than business systems and structures. I have learned to invest just as much attention working on myself as I do my business. Personal awareness has a great deal to do with our successes as entrepreneurs and this week I candidly speak about this from my own experience.
This is an area of work that I enjoy immensely with people--personal development. It often is the mindset that trips most people up on their way to the top, what ever that looks like for them. At the end of this week's article is a special announcement regarding a new mentoring program I will be launching in September. Make sure to read about it and sign up to receive more details as I begin to launch it-especially if you are ready to experience a totally unique business mentoring program.
Have a fabulous rest of your week!

Creating A Radiant Business - Reflections From Within Yourself by Wendy Burge
For many self-employed people our businesses are essentially a reflection of our unique personalities and interests. Where as, being an employee or working in larger business organizations, who we are as a person has little to do with the bottom-line success of the business unless we hold a high, executive role. This is not the case when you work for your self, who you are as a person does affect your daily business.
This intimate connection between our inner self and outer presentation is even more evident when we are solo-professionals. If we are struggling, personally, it will be reflected within our business. If we are clear about our core purpose for our business, this alignment will be conveyed as a value to others, thus, allowing us to naturally attract what we need within our business--such as clients, opportunities, and mentors. This awareness comes from my personal experience which I would like to share. In fact, I spent this past year and a half really looking at what I really wanted to create as a business which best reflected me, my knowledge, my skills, and my expertise. In order to change the way I had been working, I stepped back for a time and became introspective about who I am and how I wanted to be in service to this world. I stopped listening to others who were not achieving the successes I desired, and I found people who were. Then, I took it one step further-I went to where they were and learned from them directly so I could fast-track and leap-frog my personal growth and my business directly towards my dreams.
Part of this experience also meant that I needed to clean up some of my own limiting beliefs which had stopped me from pursuing and achieving success in the past. By reflecting on who I am as a person, I have been able to clearly outline a blueprint for the business of my dreams.
Developing and marketing my new business has been less about expensive exposure and more about a way to create a better relationship with myself and others. Yes, there are still systems and strategies I employee to make my own marketing effectively target my consumer market. And, there are other components to this that I will share which have equal value in creating a radiant business and marketing plan. Whenever I begin to share these additional strategies, people often look at me curiously because this is often the last thing they expected to hear me say, "What you say is what you get."
I am a firm believer that whatever my inner dialog or self-talk is chattering on about is what I will attract to me. I have practiced consciously to listen to the language I have created for myself and about myself. If I catch myself saying, "I can't do this", or "I'm not smart enough for that", or "I'm not capable to achieve that level of success", I immediately stop myself and check out where those beliefs are coming from. I quickly course-correct if I can on my own or ask for help from people I know and trust to give me constructive feedback. Inner dialogue that focuses on LACK keeps us in POVERTY THINKING-that there is a limit to what we can get, achieve, generate, and attract from the Universe. Yes, this is also the concept of the Law of Attraction and of Manifestation. These two belief systems are rooted in the understanding that whatever you focus on with intense feeling, you attract into existence--positive or negative. Whatever we chose to perceive is the script of the experiences we will have in our lives. Therefore, if all our self talk is about our not having the right knowledge, or resources, or gifts, or know-how to make our business successful, then we will continually attract poor business opportunities, few clients, and little money.
However, if your outlook is in check and your focus is on the positive growth, attraction of ideal clients, and having abundant money flow to your business, you will naturally attract these things effortlessly. Why? Because, you have clearly laid the foundation of value, which you offer, by infusing it with the emotion of what you desire. This does not mean you do not need to take action to make things happen, as well. It does, however, mean that you have to feel the successes you desire, to trust your belief that you can achieve this, and then move into that space of action without fear. As an entrepreneur, investing in our own personal development is the greatest investment we can make. Learning to go inside and identify our fears, limiting beliefs, negative emotions, and other unresolved issues which may leave us with feelings of shame, guilt, and resentment are just as valuable to this business-building process as is getting the right retail location or identifying ideal clients. Emotional items clog up our mental pipeline and keep us from really dreaming and believing it is possible to have what we want. It is perfectly fine to want success for ourselves not because we desire it, but because it's our birthright. It's our gifts which allow us to radiate and shine, to be in service to others, and to be reciprocated back financially, for sharing this to the world. Getting clear, honest, and in a place of truth about you dramatically shifts what becomes possible. I have done this kind of work for many years. Investing thousands upon thousands of dollars in my personal development--I have attended seminars, read dozens of books, and studied with my "mentors of the mind". All have shown me the new ways to approach healing my personal beliefs, to increase my capacity to dream big, and have allowed me to step into a business which showcases all the 'flavours' of me.
What I have found is that the more I do this, the more I am able to put my authentic self "out there" for others to see in my business, marketing, and relationships--the more I am attracting the things I desire. And, if you are reading this and think this is "woo-woo" in its logic, then I can tell you from first-hand experience--it is not. What I will share with you is that if you are not willing to look inside of yourself, to shine some light in the corners of your mind where things keep you stuck, then what you have right now, even if you think it is fine, will stay just the same. This may be okay for some people, but how many of you are willing to do this for the next 10, 15, or 25 years? Now really answer that truthfully. I'd bet many would not want the same experiences, again, even within the next 5 years. You probably want better clients, bigger bank accounts, more fun, and more time to enjoy your life. You want your dreams granted sooner than later. You can choose to not look at this part of yourself in relation to your business growth. That is what I have done in the past. Hiding my head in the sand hill of avoidance-- thinking that keeping my personal self separate from my business was best. However, what I discovered was that if you do not grow, your business does not grow! So, if things are not flowing into your business the way you'd like, and you keep wondering why you are not seeing the successes you desire, then there is a battle brewing inside of you. Nothing starts to close the doors of a business faster than feelings of frustration. Personal development is an area that I routinely work on and help my clients with as well. I can offer all the marketing strategies in the world to help someone's business, but, if they do not have the internal focus and belief to move their business success forward, then marketing is nothing more than an engine without fuel to run on.
Turning your attention towards your inner self does work and does pay off, too. The clarity gained allows you to redirect your business goals, attract clients, and garnish greater income. More so, are the freedom and enjoyment discovered by being authentically you! That is true radiant success--I believe. What next: Take stock in who you are and be honest about whatever you uncover and find. If you resist this process, you will limit your possibilities to dream bigger. Grab some paper and a pen and start a list of those fears and limiting beliefs (can't, shouldn't, don't, couldn't) all that old negative self-talk keeping you stuck--plugging up your mental pipeline toward success. Summoning up the courage to do this, with a no-excuses approach, is the same that is needed to create great radiant marketing. It will be uncomfortable and tricky, at first, but, gets easier along the way. And the results, well, they will radiate around you! I promise. As you begin to work on this aspect of your business, don't forget about your marketing. Your actions here are just as important at this point to the process too. If you have been looking for that secret formula for growing your business with ease through your marketing, then you may want to consider hiring a consultant--like myself. The Book: Meatball Sundae by Seth Godin
In the traditional marketing melting pot used to grab the attention of consumers Seth Godin challenges the idea that all that is old can not be topped with all that is new in the form of marketing tools like blogs, email, You-Tube videos, MySpace, and more.
If you have any interest in learning about the current shifts occurring in marketing and the trends businesses need to be aware of how to identify and accommodate them, then this is the best little book out there.
In Meatball Sundae, Seth Godin offers the definitive guide to the fourteen trends no marketer can afford to ignore (and since all small business owners are marketers this is a must read!). Best of all he explains what to do about the increasing power of stories, not facts; about shorter and shorter attention spans; and about the new math that says five thousand people who want to hear your message are more valuable than the five million who don't.
He clearly demonstrates the importance of getting your marketing in sync with the reality of how consumers now relate to business. Its worth checking out!
