Imagine living God's kingdom now as disciples of Jesus' radical way, just imagine.... "A place to Encounter God in worship, Encourage one another in life and faith, and Engage the world for Christ." |

From the Pastor's Desk |

The world is certainly upside down right now. The economy is a roller coaster; we have witnessed political uprisings in Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya. Global disaster and personal uncertainty is the theme for the times. I am grateful for the faith community at Lake Burien Presbyterian Church that seeks to "encounter God in worship, encourage one another in life and engage the world for Christ."
On Sept. 11, 2011, and running through Oct. 30, I am starting a sermon series entitled, "Being Church." We will explore what it means to be the church in the midst of uncertainty and out of this chaos be people of hope. It is a chance for new members to be received into membership and for existing members to say, "Yes" again in and through the ministry at Lake Burien.
This sermon series is different. Instead of offering a class for new members, I will preach the content on Sunday mornings to make it easier for you to become acquainted with who we are and offer you a chance to join this church. All that you need to do is attend most of these weeks and let us know that you would like to join the church. We will make available in the narthex a short application form for you to complete in order to complete your membership. Other key dates to remember are:
- Sept. 25 is a tour of the campus and a "Sandwich Sunday." At the tables you will sit with long time members and leaders to share stories of life, community and faith. It is a time for connection.
- Oct. 9 is an informal Q and A with Tobin and Dawn Wilson after the service for new members. This will begin at 11 a.m.
- Oct. 30 we will receive new members in the worship service and offer a chance for all to recommit to life and ministry at LBPC. A reception will follow in our newly remodeled Multi-purpose Room.
- I also will be leading a coffee shop book study on a great book by Brennan Manning entitled, The Ragamuffin Gospel. I will meet with anyone interested at Burien Press on Tuesday mornings at 8:30 a.m. beginning Tuesday, Sept. 13.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask me by calling my cell number at 206.931.6244. Grace, mercy and peace to you!
The Church is the hope for the world!

ENCOUNTER |
From the Music Department
I am so delighted to continue worshipping and ministering with you at Lake Burien. Thank you for your welcoming smiles and words of encouragement each week.
A favorite verse of mine, and probably of yours as well, is Isaiah 26:3, "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee." There isn't much that's peaceful in our world and our society today, but for us as followers of Christ, we are promised rich security both for today and in the future.
And what better way to meditate on that promise and celebrate that security than to sing about it! You may say that you've haven't sung since your school days, or that your voice is no longer what is used to be.... But none of that matters. When we form a group that lifts its musical hearts to the Lord, there is blessing, and pretty good music, too. The same goes for you instrumentalists!
Please consider joining us Wednesday nights at 7 for the best time with music and friends that you've ever had! We sing, share our lives, pray for one another, and surround each other with love. You need to be there!
Our first rehearsal will be Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary. I would love to see you. If you have any questions at all, send me a quick email at jklere@aol.com
We will keep our minds stayed on Him who alone gives true peace. All of this "rehearsal" will prepare us for the great choir and orchestra in Heaven that will never, never, never end.
Christ's blessings on you,
Jan Klerekoper
Director of Worship and Arts

Sandwich Sunday
The Encouragement Committee and the Deacons are excited to invite you to Sandwich Sunday on Sept. 25 after the church service to celebrate fall and back-to-school and correlate with the sermon series "Being Church."
- Everyone is welcome! Sept. 25 after church.
- Ingredients for making sandwiches will be provided.
- If you are able, please bring home-made cookies to share.
- Pastor Tobin and Sarah Fox will provide a tour of the church property for those who are interested.
- There will be donation boxes on the tables for people who are able to help with the expenses; however, everyone is welcome. Please come whether or not you can donate.
A Big Thank You
The Encourage Committee also wants to thank all the people who helped, supported and prepared things at the Sundae-Sunday July 7, and all of you who came and enjoyed the event. This event was a lot of fun, and it showed once more how welcoming the Fellowship Hall/ Multipurpose Room is, and how we come together to celebrate and have fun.
Bulletin Announcements
You probably have seen the new set of announcements in the Sunday bulletin on the back of the sermon notes. Through the Encourage Committee process, bulletin requests go through Norma Kastien, who will coordinate the announcements and contact Jeanie. Please contact Norma by email (normalk@comcast.net) or phone (253.852.5929) early in the week so she can coordinate and contact Jeanie before Wednesday morning. In fact, let her know as soon as you have an announcement you want to pass on, and she will work on the best time and way to do this. We on the Encourage Committee appreciate your support, responses and questions.
Labyrinth Renewal
The community labyrinth in our courtyard has been renewed. With a nod to the original (you still can see some of the old paint left on purpose) there is new energy and brightness to the space. Start at the opening on the east side and walk the labyrinth to achieve a contemplative state of mind. Walking slowly, following the path, one can lose track of direction and the outside world and this quiets the mind and allows for answers, peace to enter in. The labyrinth can be a sacred path. The labyrinth can be a place of laughter and joy (watch kids run the path and gather in the middle). The labyrinth is a place to encounter God, to engage with God, to be encouraged in God. Take a walk.
Training for Grief Facilitators
Although this training is through the Widowed Information and Consultation Services, where Margarita works, it will be here at LBPC in the Fireside Room on Oct. 15, and is open to anyone who wants to understand about how to support people who are going through the grief journey. The training is universal enough to apply in many areas. Please contact Margarita if you are interested in attending.
Health Care Team
Use Caution with "Natural" Supplements
Products classified as dietary supplements by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration do not require the strict testing and approval processes that are required for drugs, which makes it difficult for consumers to evaluate their safety. Although there has been some research conducted on the efficacy of most supplements, the potential benefits are not fully proven scientifically in many cases. Moreover, even commonly used "natural" mood and memory supplements can spell trouble for individuals with certain health problems, or for those who take these supplements in large doses or in combination with certain drugs. As the following list of possible negative side effects suggests, it would be wise to check with your doctor before using any of these "natural" therapies:
MOOD SUPPLEMENTS:
DHEA: This supplicant is said to improve mood, energy and libido, but it also is known to cause blood clotting, liver damage, increased risk of prostate, breast and ovarian cancer, rapid heartbeat, irritability, unwanted hair growth, and acne flare-ups.
FISH OIL: Taken to help with depression, this supplement may increase the effects of blood thinners such as aspirin or warfarin.
KAVA KAVA: A supplement used to relieve stress, and aid with anxiety and depression, kava has been linked to liver damage. It also may increase the effects of alcohol, sedatives and tranquilizers, and adversely affect motor reflexes and judgment in driving.
ST. JOHN'S WORT: This supplement taken to help with depression, may cause sun sensitivity, and increase the effects of narcotics, alcohol and antidepressants. It may interact with drugs used to prevent rejection of transplanted organs and with medications used to treat HIV and cancer.
VALERIAN ROOT: Used to treat anxiety and promote sleep, valerian can cause headache, muscle spasm, heart palpitations, dizziness and gastric distress. It may increase the effects of sedatives and tranquilizers, and should not be taken by people with liver disease.
MEMORY SUPPLEMENTS:
FOLIC ACID: This supplement is thought to improve memory and brain power, but too much can make it harder to recognize a deficiency of vitamin B12, especially in older adults. Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause nerve damage and mental confusion.
GINKGO BILOBA: A supplement taken to improve memory, ginkgo can cause headache, dizziness, and heart palpations. It should not be taken with blood-thinning agents.

From the Children's Department

Happy September, LBPC!
When I think of September, I envision summer coming to a close and the long days of sunlight turning into the routine days of going back to school. Schools in the Highline district are starting back on Sept. 1 this year, so please be in prayer for all of the children and families of this community. Our desire for this upcoming school year is to go deeper with all of the LBPC children and families. We want all of our children to experience Jesus in a real way, so a lot of our program structure will reflect this goal as well as provide opportunities for our children and families to connect with the church and with each other. I also am hoping that more individuals from LBPC will catch our vision for the after-school and children's ministry programs and will want to get on board with the work that God is doing.
Reflecting on this past month, I am very thankful for the ways that God worked in and through our kids during our seven-week summer program. We were able to see a number of kids grow and change as they experienced life with us this summer. The summer program came to an end on Aug. 12, and we were able to have a wonderful end-of-the-summer celebration with all our kids and their families.
It was a great way to testify to the work that God did in our kids' lives this summer, and it was very encouraging to hear some new families state that they will definitely be a part of next summer's program!
Even though I will miss the "dog days of summer," I am looking forward to a brand-new school year of working alongside the children and families of the LBPC community!
Many blessings!
Sarah
Adult Ed
Summing it all up, friends, I'd say you'll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious-the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse.
---Philippians 4:8 from The Message
Adult education classes/CAFÉ (continuing adult faith enrichment) starts again Sept. 11 in the Northwest room about 15 minutes after worship ends!
Sept. 11 - Double Click, with the Rev. Dr. Tobin Wilson - digging deeper in the sermon, "Being Church"
We hope to offer Double Click every second Sunday of the month. The "double click" format will allow us to hear more of the thought process and study that went into the sermon, to ask questions and comment, to ponder and to dig just a little deeper...
Sept. 18 - Natalie Reber, director, Hospitality House, will update us on what's been happening at the women's shelter with a power point presentation and she will share with us upcoming events, fundraisers and ways we can further support the women.
Engage team will periodically present, in the CAFÉ, one of the many "in" house and "out" house missions we support at LBPC with our energy, imagination, intelligence and love - our hands and feet! Hospitality House is the first!
Oct. 2 - Orientation to the "NFOG - New form of government" for the Presbyterian Church USA, with Dr. Tobin Wilson
Project Report: School Supplies for Seahurst School
To say "thank you" is not enough... even saying it a hundred times over. Everyone at LBPC has been so generous in supporting this project. Many of you did your shopping and brought bags of school supplies. Others made monetary donations. As of the middle of August we had received $710. I have been able to purchase 62 backpacks; 18 backpacks have been donated, making a total of 80. I also have purchased paper, notebooks, crayons, scissors, pencils, pens, erasers, rulers and colored pencils.
We will be helping many children have school supplies as they start the school year. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Walk with Kristi Lonheim and Jonathan Acker through Old Jerusalem to Visit the Abdullah Family
How many of you realize that Lake Burien has been sponsoring an Arab Christian family in the Old City of Jerusalem for over 10 years? I wasn't really aware either, until we were visiting Jerusalem regularly and were asked if we could visit the Abdullah family. We made arrangements, wandered through the winding paths of the Old City, often asking for assistance, until we were led to the organization that oversees the sponsorship. We then were led to the Abdullah family home, which is just one room about 10 feet by 25 feet, for the mom and three growing boys (one is elementary school and the other are teenagers). They have access across a courtyard to bathroom facilities. The dad suffers from mental illness and struggles to have and take his medication. There are times when he is present with the family, but not very often. We have visited with many Palestinians and this was no different, a mixture of Arabic and English, and refreshments. Arab hospitality knows no bounds and we were served soda, cookies, and falafel, all of which one of the boys had run out to purchase. It is hard to accept such hospitality when you know they have so little. The mom works, at this time doing laundry, and the boys attend a private school. What was different about our visit was knowing that our church family makes it possible for this family to have hope. It is our support that allows the boys to have such a great education. Education is the worldwide hope for a better tomorrow. Our prayers are the greater hope as, currently, even an education won't help Palestinians find work in their current situation. So stop right now and pray for the Abdullah family. Pray for them again tomorrow and the next day. If you are so moved you may also help with the boys' education by ensuring that our sponsorship monies do not run out. We send $50 per month to Jerusalem. Are you able to help be a part of the education of three boys? Simply put "Abdullah Family" on your check or envelope. And then lift them up in prayer once again.
