We have been up to some really fun and creative stuff for the New Year. It is so exciting I can hardly stand it. I have been working with the Session to create a first ever Spiritual Renewal Conference scheduled for March 11-13, 2011. The title of the weekend is:

VISIO DIVINA

CULTIVATING BEAUTIFUL:

SEEING GOD THROUGH THE ARTS

Cost per person: $20

I would like to mandate this for all of us (at least as much as I can mandate anything - it is America, after all) and here is why. I have a new book that will be launched that weekend. San Juan Publishing is releasing my book and I am thrilled and a bit apprehensive, too. The book is titled Areté Again. Areté is a word that means character and virtue. Thus, character again. It depicts a primary shadow in my own life in history past, with a view to an open Trinity as the place for grace to transform us from a culture and people of vice to virtue.

The cover of the book is shown here. The artist for the book coverwork featured on the cover is Linda McCray and she will bring a 24-work art show including this dramatic piece. This "Passion to Pentecost" triptych is six feet by ten feet and will cover the entire stage. She and I will present Friday night and Saturday morning. My book will be available for a special roll out purchase. I will sign your personal copy for you, if you would like. Mark Wagner will be putting together a worship group specifically for the weekend. So mark your calendar NOW and PLAN ON ATTENDING!!!

We are also sending out a Seattle-wide call to artists for the Heaven and Hell Door project. We will be giving artists a full size door where they can depict heaven on one side and hell on the other. Each artist will also be given a $25 gift card to art supplies. These doors are on a first come first serve basis. Visit LBPC website or Facebook page to pick up your door should you be interested. These pieces will remain on exhibit in our courtyard through the Lenten season. This should be a great way to enter into a season of Lent as we ask God to lead us in the direction of DEEP CHURCH!

Please join us!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

The session met late this month due to Advent and Christmas. Your dedicated leaders continued their work to the very end of 2010, and look forward with anticipation to 2011.  Just as there is year-end work to be completed in your own home or business, this is also true of our church.

The session voted and approved:

·         A 2011 balanced budget

·         The 2011 Terms of Call for Rev. Dr. Tobin E. Wilson

·         The Nominating Committee - Steve Glass as chair, Peggy Meyer and Kathy Reed as members, and Rev. Dr. Tobin E. Wilson as advisor, to recommend new officers for the new  terms of office

·         Slate of Officers for the Board of Trustees for LBPC.

All of this information will be available for receipt or approval at the Annual Congregational meeting which will be held at the end of January.  Stay tuned for the date and time of this meeting.

The session also approved the resignation of elder, Kent Stock, who resigned due to his extensive travel and adventures that he has planned for a good portion of the year. We wish Kent safe travels and thank him for his leadership and service! We look forward to hearing his travel stories upon his return.

Session also approved hosting the Seattle Presbytery for their May 2011 Presbytery Meeting on May 17. All of the ministers and elder representatives from all of the churches within the Seattle Presbytery will be present at the meeting. This may be over 250 people coming to our church. They meet six times per year to review, present and decide on the business of our presbytery. This event will include a worship service and business meetings, a review of church books, voting on General Assembly business and dinner. We are very excited to have the Presbytery come and see our re-invented campus.

The session continues to review new mission partnerships that come to LBPC inquiring to be in our building and part of our community. The session recently approved building use for "What's For Dinner Seattle?" a company that provides affordable and creative foods for seniors. The session supports these partnerships as they offer services we are not able to provide at this time. It expands the depth and breadth of the work at LBPC.

Corporate prayers for our church:

  • That the re-organization of our session and the vision and focus for the next year becomes clear and alive in the coming months.
  • That people will step up to a new way of creating an innovative church that meets the needs of the folks sitting in our pews and those we haven't met yet.

We wish you peace and joy during this Christmas season, and that you be filled with the wonder of our new year together.

Respectfully submitted,
Melinda Glass, LBPC clerk

Merry CHRISTmas and Happy New Year, LBPC! I pray that you all had a wonderful time celebrating our Savior's birth and are excited to anticipate what God is going to do in 2011! On Dec. 15 LBPC and UGM partnered together for the annual Christmas dinner, serving the children and families of the after-school program. This year's dinner was a huge success with about 60 people in attendance and almost all of our children's parents coming to be a part of the evening. It was such a blessing to connect with them and serve a small part of the Burien community.

The after-school program is on break until Jan. 4 and our first Remix dinner of 2011 will be held on Jan. 5. We are having a planning meeting for anyone interested in helping with Remix on Jan. 2 following the Sunday morning worship service. I am anticipating God will do big things in this year and would love to have any new people jump on board to serve the youth here. It really does take a village to help raise a child, so I would encourage any of you who are contemplating serving with the after-school program or Remix to sincerely pray about getting involved. Our youth need you!

I am thankful for the work that God has given me to do here at Lake Burien. I know how much God cares about children and I pray that my heart would reflect His as I look forward to how He will better use me in this upcoming year!

Blessings!

In the spirit of Advent, a season of watching and waiting, we at LBPC are excited to enter the New Year with many exciting things on the horizon! From a growing children's ministry, a restored effort to reach high school and junior high students through a new partnership with Young Life, and a growing worship and music program, there is a lot to be excited for in our little neighborhood.

Our continued goal as a faith community is to reach out to the families and individuals in Burien and surrounding communities and offer them a safe place to worship and serve, a place where all people feel loved. We want to continue to offer an environment where all people can enter in and be a part of something bigger than themselves. How exciting that we can all serve and learn together new ways to reach out to all of God's beloved children!

If you are interested in helping with our growing youth or children's ministries, or if you are ready to join the choir or worship team, please email me today so we can get connected!

"What I Really Know"

           --AARP Bulletin column

What I really know... In the December 2010 "What I Really Know" column in the AARP bulletin, Judy Brezina from Carlton, WA, wrote, "Peace on earth for me lies a few scant steps from my back porch door and within the five acres that surround a two-story dusty rose farmhouse..." Her 400-word response sang to me for I, too, know peace on earth in the beauty and secrets of my own garden sanctuary... but it also inspired thoughts for this new year of 2011. Here is what I really know as well: I will try to be more mindful and present to God within me: to see, taste, smell, touch, hear and feel God more deeply. And in that knowing and awareness of God I may deepen my relationships with others, the other, the natural world. I will call it cultivating beautiful*....

Here's what else I really know...

Jan. 2 - no class

Jan. 9 - Up Close and Personal with David Wells, MDiv, MS in counseling, licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with Samaritan Center at LBPC

Jan. 16 - Up Close and Personal with Andy Gadach, Director of Greater Highline/Tukwila Young Life

Jan. 23 - tba - (hopefully it will be Felix Omodi, Ugandan Director of Medical Teams International/Ugandan Springs - pray for healing and will-being for Felix)

Jan. 30 - no class - Annual Congregational Meeting

* "Cultivating beautiful" will be expanded on in the 2011 Lenten season

Per Capita: The per capita apportionment dollars, $40.79, are assessed for each active member on LBPC rolls. The funds are used for administrative support of ministry and mission for each of the governing bodies of the Presbytery Church (USA)

A breakdown of the distribution of the $40.79 that is due for each member is as follows:

General Assembly   $6.50

Synod                          5.46

Presbytery                 28.83

                                 $40.79

As of Dec. 31, 2009, we reported 246 active members; thus we have an outstanding bill to Presbytery in the amount of $10,034.34. Please help us offset this cost by contributing $40.79 for each active member. If you have any questions, please call Anne Tiernan at 206.241.2426.

Thank you for your continued support!

Thanks for your prayers...

Your prayers, cards, visits and phone calls were much appreciated, as I had major heart surgery on Oct. 4. I do thank you sincerely. My heart healed nicely. The rest of me is trying to catch up with it. It is so nice to be a member of such a caring congregation.

Sincerely,

Marian Shoemaker
