PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Greetings!,
It's in the air. . . it's hope. We as Americans all have it. Some days it's stronger than other days, but it's there...it's inherent in our fiber as citizens of this fine collection of states. You may have noticed that my messages are filled with optimism and the promise of good days, no matter the circumstance. This optimism stems from how inspired I am by you, the NYPCMA members, who fight to keep America meeting, fight to keep yourselves from being right-sized, fight to keep the human decency in your daily affairs and fight to inspire our next generation to make lemonade out of lemons.
If we take away anything from the last nine months, it is that you cannot put a price tag on human decency. Character is created out of hard circumstances, not when things are easy. Join me as we dust off our fall wardrobes, put our kids in another school year, finalize our Q4 conferences and sales missions and prepare ourselves for the promise of a recovering economy.
Warm regards,
Dawn D. Rockas, CMP President, NYPCMA National Sales Director SDCVB-Northeast Sales Office |

Planners and Suppliers Share A Piece of Their Mind at June
Roundtable Workshop
by Diana M. Brady, CMP Manager, Events Marketing, CARTUS
NYPCMA turned the tables,
allowing planners and suppliers to 'have their voices heard and to hear their
colleagues,' at the chapter's June Roundtable Workshop. Networking sessions are great but most
of the time we end up talking about our positions, who's who and what's new
instead of picking each others brains for best practices, valuable learning
experiences and tried and true techniques.

NYPCMA meeting attendees had the opportunity to participate in up to three roundtable topics. Back To Top

Become a Story Teller: How to Increase Your Influence Every Time
by Sue Hershkowitz-Coore, CSP SpeakerSue
Imagine this: You're on a site visit and instead of the sales person talking about the square footage of the ballroom, you're listening to a story about how the new carpet was selected because the colors represent peace, earth, and good luck.
Stories (and storytellers) can change skeptics into committed and engaged followers. They can help buyers see the benefits of saying yes to your project or product, and can help you stand out from the competition. Read More ... Back To Top

MEMBER NEWS:
Jeff Wood, Meetings Director, American Institute of Chemical Engineers has published his first novel - Lyft Faetels: Inner Peace is volume II in a trilogy by the author. Essentially a fantasy, the book has a serious aspect to it from which we all could learn a little bit about ourselves and the realization that the planet is a finite place, that if we irretrievably befoul our own nest, there may be no other alternative than total annihilation. The book is now available on Amazon.com. Work is progressing on the other two volumes: Lyft Faetels, Volume I and Lyft Faetels: The Beginning, Volume III. In addition, he has composed a humorous children's book entitled The Backward Man.
Samantha Bowerman, CMP, Strategic Meetings Group President and NYPCMA Past President was interviewed by Reuters Television in a July 24th segment
entitled Recession Mauls Events.
Samantha gave a sobering recap of where we stand in the US but with an
optimistic outlook for the future of the meetings and events industry due, in
part, to the intense focus of upper management on how these programs will be
conducted in the future.

President's Volunteers of the Quarter
There is an inherent dilemma with a newsletter that gets published quarterly: what if you have two exceptional volunteers? My mom would say to divide things equally; after all, you can make one half out of any whole. In the spirit of my eighty-year-young mother, allow me... Hannah Wai-Director of Marketing/Communications If you looked up the word Marketing in Webster's dictionary you might see a picture of Hannah Wai. Hannah embodies the true definition of marketing, as she is always thinking about who, what, when, where and why. Hannah's devotion and tactical marketing skills have led the way for: Converting the NYPCMA newsletter from word to digital by selecting Constant Contact; redesigning and making the NYPCMA web page more interactive; garnering local and national press coverage for NYPCMA events, Pay What You Can Initiative and Service In Sync annual program and reaching more readers by adding ESSAE, MPINJ, MPIGNY and MPIWEC to our mailing lists. Thanks for putting NYPCMA on an expanded map, Hannah!!! Rocco LaForgia-Director of Sponsorship If you looked up the word Chutzpah in Webster's dictionary you would see a picture of Rocco LaForgia. Rocco joined NYPCMA in 2008 as Director of Sponsorship. I was President-Elect and remember thinking,"Whew, another direct and outspoken person!" It wasn't until 2009 that I understood that Rocco cuts to the chase so he can have more time to do what he is known for: helping others, namely NYPCMA. With a strategic mind and hard to resist demeanor, Rocco has single-handedly created and launched the NYPCMA Sponsorship RFP, secured a sponsor for each portion of every NYPCMA program in 2009 (if he could find a sponsor for cell phone and restrooms breaks-he would), secured the first ever NYPCMA Silver Sponsorship, orchestrated the production of the NYPCMA event signage, and he continually works to make NYPCMA sponsorships equitable and relevant. Here's to our direct, tactful and helpful Rocco!!! Back To Top |
