Fellow Carvers,

Asoldier in Afghanistan couldn't be home for the holidays so he had an ice sculpture of himself sent to his 11 year old sister.  Read full Article-  When Vince Nuzzolese from Long Island found out the details of the project he waived the fee.  What a great Holiday gesture!

We recently insulated our block makers on the outside.  2" foam on the top & 1" foam on three sides (inside).  We gained more than a half a day in speed!

Are you a Professional Ice Carver?

There are 2 widely accepted definitions of Professional.  The Merriam Webster dictionary offers 1 definition of professional as "participating for gain or livelihood in an activity or field of endeavor often engaged in by amateurs".  My definition has always been someone who makes most of their income from ice carving.   But there are also ice sculptors out there who could make a living carving ice, but choose not to. Are they considered "professional" or not?  (Even though they may be masters of their craft).  A second dictionary definition is- "exhibiting a courteous conscientious, and generally businesslike manner in the workplace".

Doctors and Dentists must stay current with the latest tools and techniques in their fields.  They read journals & continue their education with classes in their field.  Most professional athletes have coaches who specialize in different fields to help them prepare.  Ice Carvers would be wise to learn from all of these "professionals" in business.  It is important to find time for important things, not just urgent things.  Do you find time to analyze your skills?  Do you read books, watch videos & discuss ice carving with other professionals?  Would you go to a doctor or dentist that did not keep up on changing technological advances in their field?  Professional athletes have coaches, Businesspeople have mentors.  If you are not improving your skills, you are most likely missing the boat.

So, are you a professional? Maybe you are earning a decent living from ice carving but could be doing even better by learning from professionals in and out of your field.  A good place to start is to set a goal.  Maybe signing up for a class or workshop from an expert would be a great place to start.
