Fellow Ice Carvers,
I've been carving ice for 20 years. 2 years ago, I finally felt comfortable carving a likeness of a persons face in ice. So for the past 2 years when someone asked- "Can you carve me out of ice?" we honored their request. This last request was different, not only did they want a likeness, they wanted it to be a luge & to last into the wee hours of the night. We opted to make our first portrait engraved in ice. I know others have been doing this for a while, but here is our first attempt-

More ice on television- December 19th, Watch Samantha Brown's show "Great Weekend" to see more ice carving. This is an exciting time for our industry, with all of the media attention. There is even more in the works, several companies have submitted sizzlers to production companies in an attempt to secure a regular reality show about ice carving. When this actually makes it to the air it will be good for all of us, & especially good for the carver that gets the show.
Nov. 27: In a bizarre incident, an ice sculpture placed at the reception area of a marriage hall turned killer. A 73-year-old man died when a huge ice sculpture in connection with a wedding reception, fell on him.
This should be a wake up call for our industry. Please design sculptures that will last the length of the event. None of us want to hurt or kill one of our customers accidentally. But is it really an accident if the design is cut too thin to last? Do you have insurance? What would happen if you provided this sculpture & were sued by the victims family?
Prevention is the best here, let's all work towards not letting this happen again. What are your thoughts?
Stay Cool
