Fellow Ice Carvers,
Every season (competition season) we have to come up with new designs. My designs and thoughts about competitions keeps moving towards abstract concepts. Many ice carvers strongly disagree with me about the value of an abstract thought or idea. To them I have 1 question- "What is it about that realistic design that you like the most?"
The answers are almost always abstract ideas!
Of course the craftsmanship must be at the highest level. Too many feel that they will design an abstract sculpture because they can get away with sub par craftsmanship. These are not the sculptures I am speaking of. I am talking about the sculptures that are carved at a high level.
We have sponsored a NICA competition which requires you to carve an abstract design. Please take the time to participate. Inject a bit of your own personality into the piece & carve it at the highest level you can. Even if you have never made an abstract design before, now is the time. Carve an emotion, feeling, action, or object in a styalized way. Challenge yourself to think a little differently & have fun
I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
