Welcome to the summer edition of the Maryland Transitioning Youth Newsletter.  As most youth take a break from school and enjoy their summers, some may also be looking for a job or a chance to gain work experience through internships and volunteering.  This edition should provide youth with additional resources as they seek out work opportunities.

Preparing for Employment by Volunteering

 Hands Raised to Volunteer

Volunteers Rock!

What? You say you can't find a job?

Have you thought about volunteering?

Here are some good reasons to volunteer:

  • You gain valuable work skills.
  • You get to explore an area of interest.
  • You make a contribution as a volunteer "worker".
  • Volunteer work looks good on your resume.
  • Your volunteer supervisor can become a reference for you.
  • Sometimes volunteer work leads to paid work.

Lots of people get started by volunteering.  Maryland Department of Disabilities Secretary Catherine Raggio couldn't find a paying job when she was 17 years old.   She began volunteering at the rehabilitation center where she had spent time as a child.  Her volunteer work inspired her to become a speech pathologist.  Two years later a paid summer position was created for her in the Speech and Hearing Department at the rehabilitation center.
