| Are you, or your son/daughter, using an assistive technology (AT) device in high school?
If the AT device was purchased by the school, most Maryland students are asked to return the device prior to leaving school. Because of this, youth and their families are encouraged to plan ahead to replace the AT device if they think AT will be needed or wanted after finishing school. The following two articles will help students and their families begin planning for this transition.

Transition Planning
Assistive Technology
Many students get assistive technology (AT) through an Individual Education Plan (IEP). Examples of AT can include alternative communication devices, computer software, magnifiers, etc. To ensure a smooth transition, students or his/her parents are encouraged to contact the Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS) two years before leaving school to apply for services. DORS can provide items such as computer hardware and software; walkers and wheelchairs; special listening devices; magnifiers; note-taking devices; etc.
Another way to get AT devices needed in college and at work is through college financial aid, a college/university, or an employer. In all of these instances, the individual with the disability must tell the college or employer that they have a disability and may be asked to provide documentation of their disability. Students and families should be aware that colleges and employers are not required to provide the same AT devices and accommodations that were received through their IEP. In addition, the AT device may be restricted to campus or the worksite and youth interested in having something they can take home or on the go should plan for this prior to leaving high school.
