Using the Perfecta Reed
 | Perfecta Reed |
The Perfecta Reed is a measuring instrument that may be used when making or adjusting clarinet or saxophone reeds. When adjusting reeds, it is preferable to adjust reeds that have already been broken in. Measure a favorite broken in reed to use these numbers as a guide to adjust other broken in reeds in the future or use the Perfecta Reed to measure your progress while making a new reed. First adjust the pointer by loosening the dial screw and rotate the frame until the zero on the dial face lines up. Then re-tighten the dial screw.
Lift the sensor and place the reed on the lower base parallel to the base ridge. Using the ridge as a guide, slide the reed's tip under the sensor to the first line. Lower the sensor and write down your measurement. Continue this process moving the reed along the lower base through each number.
Reverse the reed to the transverse side and repeat the procedure to record each measurement on both sides of the reed.Turn the lock pin handle 180 degrees counter clock-wise. This unlocks the carriage allowing you to move the carriage to the B line on the base. Match the B line to the line on the carriage. Now move the lock pin clock-wise to lock the carriage.

Continue measuring both side of the reed in the same manner throughout positions B,C,D,E and F until all the measurements are recorded on both side of the reed. Keep these measurements to use as your guide to adjusting future reeds by making adjustments in necessary areas, re-measuring and continuing to make adjustments until the reed matches your ideal measurements.
