The concert will feature the world premiere Aisling Gaelich by William G. Harbinson (b. 1953)
Aisling Gaelich is based on two traditional Irish tunes: "The Merry Priest", and "Mo Ghile Mear." The first is a traditional barn dance in common time that includes a "hornpipe skip" throughout. The second is a lyrical ballad in honor of Bonnie Prince Charlie, the descendant of Mary Stewart, Queen of Scots who had ambitions of ascending to the throne of Britain. His loyal followers fought for him to take possession of the crown and to put an end to religious persecution in Ireland. The rebellion was put down, hundreds of thousands died in battle, and the prince fled and died in exile.
Dr. Blaha will perform the Concerto for Tuba by Eric Ewazen (b. 1954). Dr. Christopher Blaha joined the music faculty as Assistant Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Appalachian State in the fall of 2009. He holds his Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees in tuba performance from the University of Michigan, where he studied with Fritz Kaenzig, and his Bachelor of Music in Tuba performance from The Ohio State University. His additional teachers include Wes Jacobs, Marianne Ploger, Ron Bishop, and Gary Tirey. Dr. Blaha was Principal Tuba of the Charleston, South Carolina Symphony Orchestra from 2004-2008 and has performed with the Detroit Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, Toledo Symphony, Columbus Symphony, and Ann Arbor Symphony orchestras. Dr. Blaha has also held instructional positions at Charleston Southern University and Armstrong Atlantic State University, in addition to his activities as a guest artist and clinician.
