Our Common Life - Words from the Conference Staff

There are so many opportunities in this ministry to stand with you on holy ground.  Thank you for these moments!  The ground felt holy under my feet this past Sunday evening as I gathered with pastors and their families from Eastern Iowa Association around the beautiful communion table at Edwards Congregational UCC in Davenport.   We came together to worship.  We sang.  We raised Psalms.  We fed each other bread and cup.

IowaSummerI preached some Easter, drawing from Luke.  We are nearly as far from Easter as we can get - by the calendar, at least.  It's a decidedly un-Easter-ish morning in Baldwin.  The view from my window is of a distant haze, a gray sky, and bare walnut trees, their leaves fallen once more.   Surely there are seasons for each of us when we feel as far from Easter as we can possibly get in ways that have nothing to do with calendars.  We experience moments, and long stretches of moments,  when the story that is at the heart of us - "He is not here, but has risen" - seems, as it did to the apostles who first heard it, an idle tale.

Gray late September days are good for reading Easter gospels and singing hymns of resurrection, for humming alleluias while planting bulbs, for drawing near to worship with dear brothers and sisters who stand at varying distances from the empty tomb.   I thank God for your congregation and for its holy work of proclaiming resurrection in word and deed.

Stillspeaking Friend-Raising Weekend - Nov 5-7

A new 60-second video message from the United Church of Christ will help kick-off the Stillspeaking Ministry's National Friend-Raising Weekend, November 5-7.  "We will launch our next video ad on November 5, with the help of members and friends who will share it with millions across the internet," says the Rev. Felix Carrion, coordinator of the UCC's Stillspeaking Ministry. "As we learned earlier this year, our best broadcasting arsenal is our members' enthusiasm to advance our messages forward via social networking.  The new commercial will be the centerpiece of a special 'friend-raising' emphasis on November 7."  Members are asked to be intentional about inviting others to join them at church services that day.

"We want to underscore the primary goal of the Stillspeaking Ministry, which is to grow the United Church of Christ in visibility, yes, but also numerically," Carrion says. "This will be a day to let our UCC light shine."

HELP NASHVILLE!

Early in May of this year torrential rains caused massive flooding in the Nashville area.  The Long Term Recovery Committee (LTRC) is now moving forward with receiving volunteer work groups to assist with repairing homes in the Nashville area.  We are grateful to the Brookmeade UCC for their willingness to provide housing for work groups; additionally, we have access to other housing if Brookmeade is not available in the week a group would like to come and work.  Pam Small of Evansville, IN has agreed to serve as our long term volunteer coordinator to register UCC groups.

This is a major effort and currently the Nashville LTRC plans to be at work at least until August 2012.  Below is a link to the UCC site that includes information about the floods; and registration information.  More than 2,000 families and individuals are in need of assistance to be back in their homes.
