Pentecost Resolutions
Have your
Pentecost celebrations included
beautiful platters of fruit? The
blessed virtues we name as fruit of the Holy Spirit are found in Galatians
5:22-23. Most contemporary translations
list nine: "...love, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." The tradition of twelve fruits comes to us
from the old Latin Vulgate rendering of the same passage: "...charity, joy, peace, patience, benignity
(quality of being kind and gentle), goodness, longanimity (patience,
good-natured tolerance of delay or incompetence), mildness, faith, modesty,
continence, chastity." I've
lingered over these lists lately. I've
prayed in shame and sorrow as I recall how few daily servings of fruit there
are in my words and thoughts. I've
prayed in hope as I pack for a new day. I've prayed bouncing in absolute excitement at the discovery of a new
fruit! Longanimity. Yum! Good-natured tolerance of delay or incompetence makes a delicious
Pentecost resolution, a sweet refreshment in the dust and grit of horn-honking,
eye-rolling, and complaint-collecting. Which
fruit is the Spirit calling you to serve in more generous portions these days? Jonna
Jensen, Associate Conference Minister for Eastern Iowa
