| Roatan helps put Honduras back on the travel map |
|
 |
A favorite souvenir on Honduras' most popular island destination is a T-shirt that reads, "Where the hell is Roatan? Answer: Between Utila and Guanaja."
Other than scuba divers, most are unaware of the Caribbean paradise about 50 kilometers off the Central American coast and flanked by its smaller, Bay Island neighbors along the southern end of the world's second-longest barrier reef.
The island's most talked-about development is the new Mahogany Bay Cruise Center, a $62 million partnership between Carnival Corp. and a local businessman. Capable of accommodating 8,000 passengers on two ships, Roatan's second cruise terminal whisks vacationers via chairlift to a private beach where cold beers and thatched-roof cabanas await.
But outside of the cruise terminals, there is a whole other Roatan to be discovered.
"They've [tourists] never heard of Roatan, and they're blown away by what they find: a mountainous, tropical island with an 'old Caribbean' feel. It's a Jimmy Buffett place, even though he's never been here," says West Bay restaurant owner and real-estate broker Edward Moulder.
Bob Lee's aptly named Hole in the Wall is a tiny, over-the-water restaurant near Oak Ridge that's a cross between a Texas roadhouse and a set from Gilligan's Island. Lee washed up in Roatan 20 years ago from California, his boat sidelined by a storm and a gash in the hull. The sunken trimaran now rests under the bar of the Hole in the Wall. The 66-year-old Lee, accompanied by his scarlet macaw, Abogado, says he wears shoes "only when I'm forced to."

Custom tours are also available
Cycling tours are popular throughout Europe, but running tours?
That's what two members of a Dutch triathlon club had in mind when they formed "Tourist Run Amsterdam," a company that will launch running tours of the city starting next month.
Licensed guides who are also seasoned runners will provide "running commentary" as they lead tourists on 7.5 kilometer (5-mile) jogs along the canals, across bridges, through the Red Light district, Dam square, past the Anne Frank House and more...
Custom Tours can be arranged catering to a groups individual needs concerning length, speed, etc. All groups are limited to 5 runners.

Q - "What travel immunizations will I need?"
A - Great question... Unfortunately, this is not a question I am personally equipped to answer.
The Public Health Agency of Canada says:
"If you are planning to travel outside of Canada, you may require immunizations, depending on your travel destination, the length of your stay and whether or not your routine immunizations are up-to-date. Since it can take several weeks for an immunization to protect you against a disease, you should consult a travel health clinic or your family physician 6 to 8 weeks before your trip in order to allow enough time for the vaccines or immunizing agent to take effect.
The actual immunizations you may require will vary according to your age, health, and any pre-existing medical conditions, as well as the nature of your travel, whether you will be staying in city hotels or travelling in remote rural areas. A travel health clinic or family physician should assess your individual circumstances and provide any vaccines that may be required for your trip."
