| Muggles at Hogwartz in Chicago? |
|
|
By Judy Keen, USA TODAY
CHICAGO - Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is finally admitting Muggles.
Muggles - non-magical humans - are never seen at the mythic school where Harry Potter learns spells, potions and defense against the dark arts, but they're welcome at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry, where more than 200 props and costumes from the blockbuster movies re-create Hogwarts in an exhibition.
Harry Potter: The Exhibition takes visitors from the Hogwarts Express train platform through the Gryffindor common room, classrooms, the Great Hall, the Forbidden Forest and Hagrid's hut. The tour is populated with creatures from the seven novels by J.K. Rowling and six Potter movies: life-sized centaurs, Buckbeak the hippogriff, dementors, thestrals and Dobby the house elf. Along the way are vignettes featuring dozens of elaborate costumes and icons of the Potter universe, including Harry's magic wand and round glasses.
"We think it's inspirational for people to look at how the filmmakers literally bring the books to life," says Eddie Newquist, president of branded entertainment for Exhibitgroup/Giltspur, which produced the exhibition. "We want to exceed expectations and ... surprise people."
David Mosena, president and CEO of the Museum of Science and Industry, expects the Potter exhibit to be a hit at a time when some museums have seen attendance drop because of the struggling economy. "Many of the people who will come are in the sweet spot of the museum already, because this is all about imagination and this is a museum about imagination and innovation," Mosena says. "I think it will be big."

| Travel's Most Endangered Destinations |
|
By Peter J. Frank
Isn't it ironic that as it gets easier to travel around the world, there are fewer amazing things to see.
The earth's most revered marvels are increasingly falling victim to overcrowding, global warming, and untrammeled development. Of course, the rush to see those disappearing treasures means-ironically, again-that they become even further endangered. Climate change and human encroachment are without doubt the double karate chop to many of the world's most special wonders, threatening to KO them for everyone.
So while we're suggesting that you put these spots on your must-do list, we also hope you visit them in a low-impact, environmentally sustainable way. And spread the word: With the right kind of attention, these wonders will be around for future generations of travelers.
From the Glaciers of Europe to Central America's Cloud Forests to the Great Barrier Reef...
