The Passion Play
The quaint village of Oberammergau, in the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, in Bavaria, Germany, is world famous for its spectacular Passion Play, performed by the locals just once a decade.
In the early 1630s the Black Death decimated Europe's population. Oberammergau remained untouched until a homesick villager returned one night, unknowingly bringing with him the dreaded plague. Almost 100 villagers died as a result.
Frightened survivors vowed that if God saved them from the plague, once every 10 years they would re-enact the agony and crucifixion of Christ. From then on there were no further deaths from the plague-and the villagers have fulfilled their pledge ever since.
The Oberammergau Passion Play was first performed in 1634 and is now performed in years ending with a zero, except 1984 which was the 350th anniversary. It involves over 2000 actors, singers, instrumentalists and technicians, all residents of the village, with rehearsals starting at least a year before the event.
The play depicts the story of Jesus Christ's passion, beginning with the entry into Jerusalem and ending with the resurrection and transfiguration. Each performance starts at 2:30 pm and ends approximately at 10:30. These times are subject to change by the Passion Play committee. Dinner break lasts about three hours.
The Passion Play Theatre has an open-air stage framed by magnificent alpine scenery. A covered auditorium has almost 5,000 seats.
Tens of thousands of people, of all faiths, flock to Oberammergau during the performance season.

| World's Top Hotel Bartenders |
|
|
By Mark Ellwood, Travel & Leisure
Top mixologists from Beijing to the Big Easy are drawing thirsty crowds-and giving new cachet to hotels.
New cocktail joints may be mushrooming from Melbourne to St. Mark's Square, but as finicky drinkers demand better martinis, the real bastions of great drinks mixing aren't these pop-up stand-alone spots-they're the (often unheralded) bars hidden inside hotels.
Check out the slideshow of the top 10 hotel bartenders and their signature cocktails. |
| Author Nora Roberts opening B&B |
|
By DAVID DISHNEAU, Associated Press Writer
BOONSBORO, Md. - Tragedy, desire and a happy ending. A new Nora Roberts' novel?
Close. It's her new bed-and-breakfast, a luxurious getaway built from the charred remains of a 210-year-old hotel in downtown Boonsboro, near Roberts' western Maryland home.
The eight, literary-themed rooms are furnished with items largely chosen by Roberts and purchased or made locally, reflecting her love affair with the little town that has become a destination for romance readers.
The best-selling author and her husband, Bruce Wilder, will welcome their first guests Tuesday to Inn BoonsBoro, nearly a year after an accidental fire destroyed all but the stone walls.

Some signs and notices written in English -- more or less -- that were discovered throughout the world.
In a Bucharest hotel lobby: The lift is being fixed for the next day. During that time we regret that you will be unbearable.
In a hotel in Athens: Visitors are expected to complain at the office between the hours of 9 and 11 A.M. daily.
On the menu of a Swiss restaurant: Our wines leave you nothing to hope for.
Outside a Hong Kong tailor shop: Ladies may have a fit upstairs.
In a Bangkok dry cleaners: Drop your trousers here for best results.
In a Rome laundry: Ladies, leave your clothes here and spend the afternoon having a good time.
In a Zurich hotel: Because of the impropriety of entertaining guests of the opposite sex in the bedroom, it is suggested that the lobby be used for this purpose.
And I'll leave you with a great story!
Traffic Police
Donald was driving home late one afternoon, and he was driving above the speed limit. He notices a police car with its blue lights on in his rear view mirror. He thinks "I can outrun this guy," so he floors it and the race is on. The cars are racing down the A9 road to Inverness -- 60, 70, 80, 90 miles an hour.
Finally, as his speedometer passes 100, Donald figures he had better give up. He pulls over to the side of the road. The officer gets out of his police car and approaches the car. He leans down and says "Listen Sir, I've had a really tough day, and I just want to go home. Give me a good excuse and I'll let you go."
Donald thought for a moment and said... "Three weeks ago, my wife ran off with a policeman. When I saw your police car in my rear view mirror, I thought that you were the officer and that you were trying to give her back to me!"
