Rector's Reflections
Climbing Down the Mountain
This past week JoEllen, Lydia and I were in the mountains of western North Carolina at Kanuga Conference Center. Kanuga is an Episcopal Conference Center nestled in the Smoky Mountains. It is a little slice of southern mountain heaven. The conference I attended was called the "Renewal Conference" and has been conducted annually for more than 40 years. I remember going to this conference with my parents when I was a teenager, and now my kids and I have been attending for the last seven years. This is the 37th year for my parents.
You may be asking, "Why do people keep going to the same conference year after year?"There are several reasons. One, it is the relationships you build. Zech and Lydia have a network of friends all over the southeast who they can't wait to see each summer. I can say the same thing, and now JoEllen has experienced it as well. Second, for a full week there is no TV, no cell phones and no Internet. Just a cabin in the woods by a beautiful lake, three full meals a day and obligatory afternoon naps in the cool mountain air. Third, the speakers are great. In years past Archbishop Carey has been a speaker as well as author and theologian Paul Zahl, and Mike Hill, the Bishop of Bristol, UK. Finally, the most important reason people come back each year is because of the work of the Holy Spirit. The Renewal Conference always centers on the ministry and works of the Holy Spirit. Each summer I attend I receive a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit and a renewed sense of grace, mission and ministry. It is by far the best conference I go to each year, hands down.
And here is the great part - it's open to everyone. You don't have to be clergy. You don't have to be southern. You don't have to be an Episcopalian. You just have to want to grow deeper in your relationship with Jesus and be open to the work of the Holy Spirit in your heart, life and ministry. Check it out for yourself at www.kanuga.org Consider going next year. We could have a Wisconsin caravan. They would never know what hit them.

50th Anniversary Campaign Update
As of July 6, our total pledges for the campaign were $161,890. The amount collected as of July 6 is $93,491.
So far, we have been able to pay off the kitchen loan of $40,914 and we have enough money to replace the boiler. Plus we have $10,000 set aside for Outreach.
When we reach our goal of $250,000, we will also be able to repave the parking lot and have $50,000 for Outreach.
I am amazed and delighted by the generosity of our parishioners, former members and the other parishes who donated. With our upgrades to the church, we should be good for another 50 years, plus our outreach funds will be able to help many in need. Thank you all.

Spirit-Filled Worship and Prayer
Are you hungry for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit? Are you feeling a bit dry and perhaps restless? Then I would suggest you join our Hour of Prayer and Worship that meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at 7 p.m. at St. Michael's. It is a time to be renewed, restored and to reconnect. The next session is at 7 p.m. on July 14 in the Chapel.

We Want to Hear You "Loud and Clear"
The Vestry will be considering a proposal from the Christian Education team regarding pushing back the 9 a.m. service to a later time, having Sunday school during the worship time and creating a worship service for third-eighth grade children.
We want to hear you "Loud and Clear" so here is your chance. Follow the link below -- answer three short questions and give us your comments. You can e-mail your response to info@stmichaelsracine.org, leave it in the offering plate, or place a copy in Kathy Pfaffle's mailbox outside of the church office. Your response will give the Vestry the feedback it needs to make informed decisions.
