Rector's Reflections
Open Up and Say "Ah"

Each year in the fall I get a checkup. My doctor checks my weight, heart, reflexes, runs a battery of test on my blood and everything else associated with a physical. He even asks me about my spiritual life. Imagine that my doctor wants to make sure that I am aware of all aspects of my life, because they are all related to my health and well being.  Now the reason I bring this up is because I believe we as Christians need to have a spiritual check up just as often, if not more frequently. Why? Because sometimes we can grow cold and indifferent to things of the Spirit.

Where does one go for a spiritual checkup? Well, you can always come to me and I would be thrilled to sit down and talk about your spiritual and faith life.  You can also do a self-examination and if an area is out of whack, then you can come to me and we can discuss it.

How does one do a spiritual self-examination? First, we have to remember God wants us more then we want him. So more often than not, the issues regarding our spiritual life have to do with our resistance to God's intervention. Second, we have to remember there is nothing we can do in and of ourselves which draws us into deeper relationship with God. The only power we have is free will. Therefore, the issue is not us trying to get to God, but rather our willingness to let God into our lives, hearts, relationships and body.

There are five distinct and unique ways through which we open ourselves to God and his grace: worship, prayer, study, service and ministry. Imagine yourself in a one room house with five walls. Each wall has a window, and God is outside the house and you are in it. God wants to come into the house and be with you, love you, heal you and restore you. However all the windows are shut tight. God has no access to you. It is only when we choose to open a window that we allow him to have access to us and our lives. And so the more windows you open, the more access he has and the more opportunity he has to change us into the saints we were called to be. And so each window is labeled accordingly; worship, prayer, study, service, ministry.

In order to self-examine our spiritual lives, we need to assess each of those areas in our lives and ask the question "is the window open or closed?" If it is open, how far? For example, with worship the question is "how often do I come to church on Sunday?" Do you come to worship only on Christmas and Easter? Do you come once a month?   How open is your window?  Consider prayer for a moment. Do you have a prayer life? Is it regular, disciplined and responsive to the needs of many people?  Ask those type of questions in regard to the study of the Bible, service to others and ministry within and through the church.

I encourage you to examine your spiritual life. Remember these things:  worship, prayer, study, service and ministry are not our work but rather ways we open ourselves up to God's transforming power. So I think you are overdue for a spiritual checkup. Open up and say "AHHHHHH!"

50th Anniversary Campaign Update

As of June 20, our total pledges for the campaign were $158,865.  Only $91,135 to go.

The breakdown of these pledges is:

Members who pledged                                            58

    Total amount pledged                                         $134,595

    Average pledge                                                   $2,320

Past members who pledged                                    11

   Total amount pledged                                          $21,525

   Average pledge                                                    $1,957

Parishes that pledged                                             16

   Total amount pledged                                          $1,245

   Average pledge                                                    $78

Amount collected as of June 20th                           $81,654

Members who have not pledged                            76

If every member who has not pledged made a pledge of $1,199, we would meet our goal.  Now this amount is out of the question for some people.  However, there are some who are able to pledge quite a bit more.  If every member will pledge what they can, we will be able to put in a new boiler, resurface the parking lot and have money for Outreach.  Please fill out a pledge card and put it in the collection plate on Sunday, mail it in, or e-mail us with the information.  Thanks in advance.

VBS Bulletin Board

The VBS Bulletin Board has been emptied as quickly as we have been filling it up!  We are so grateful that the people of St. Michael's have blessed VBS with their donations.  If you took an item off of the board and haven't brought it back to church, please remember that our deadline is firm, and it's this Sunday, June 26th!  We are going to begin shopping right away for any items that we did not receive.  Again, we offer our sincerest thanks for the items and cash that have been donated.  As stated in Phillippians 1:3 "I thank my God every time I remember you."  We couldn't make VBS happen without you!

Thursday Night Prayer starts June 23 at 7 p.m.

Join us on Thursday night in the chapel for a time of prayer and worship. All are welcome. We are going to ask the Holy Spirit to guide and direct us in our pray and worship. This is not by the book (prayer book, that is) but rather by the Spirit. Come and see what God has for you.

Calling All Church Ladies!

Come join us for the comedy "The Church Basement Ladies" on Saturday, June 26.  We will attend the 2 p.m. matinee that is playing at Vogel Hall in the Marcus Center.  The cost is $34 as long as we fill 10 or more seats.  The Marcus Center is saving us a block of seats in the center aisle in rows L and M.  The seating chart will be hanging up at church on Sunday.

Most likely we will meet at St. Michael's, go out for lunch and then carpool up to the play.  The last day to sign up is noon on Wednesday, June 22.

Call Mary Cornelius at (262) 456-6428 if you'd like to sign up, or for more information.  Or you can send an e-mail to corneliusfamily@wi.rr.com.

Fellowship at St. Michael's

Recently, a small group met over a period of six weeks to analyze fellowship at St. Michael's.  Their report was just received and approved by the Vestry.  Now we move into Phase 2 - developing a fellowship committee that will administer fellowship opportunities within the church.

We are looking for people to join this team. The group will be responsible for scheduling, advertising, and finding hosts for church-sponsored events, and for encouraging and facilitating "affinity group" events.  This group will meet monthly (away from St. Michael's), and will last through the end of March 2012.  At that time, members of the group will have "fulfilled" their service, and may choose to rejoin for another 9 months or leave the team.

If this interests you, please contact Mike Prudhom (mrprudhom@gmail.com or 632-4394).  He has agreed to chair this committee and can provide more information if needed.

Thank you, on behalf of a grateful congregation!

During the Recreation Weekend, one of the most successful events was the parish dinner. On behalf of the congregation, the Vestry offers a hearty thank you to all who brought wonderful dishes to share, and especially to Wally Herman, Eric Babington, and Dana Babington who coordinated the event.  It was said that Eric thinks himself to be somewhat of a pit master.  Well, anyone who tasted his pork shoulder, chicken, or the most excellent brisket will definitely agree.  Thank You!!
