Rector's Reflections
Be Prepared!
Someone came up to me after church Sunday and said, "You have been inspired over the last three Sundays or else I am just listening better." I said "thank you," but upon reflection I should have said "Yes." I have felt particularly inspired of late. I spend a lot of my time preparing my sermons and I hope it shows. I believe the single most important ministry I have is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. And on Sunday morning I have the majority of our membership, visitors and guests sitting quietly and ready to listen. Did you read that "ready" to listen. You see preaching is a two way street. I spend many hours (typically between 8-10 hours/week) preparing the sermon. But unless folks are coming to church equally prepared to listen, then it is a futile exercise. That's right, the folks sitting in the pews are not spectators. You are participants in the preaching and you have a responsibility to come prepared, ready to listen, ready to hear God speak to your heart or your circumstances or even to poke you in the ribs or perhaps even kick you in the seat of your pants ( oh yeah, I went there).
So this begs the question - how do I prepare to come to worship ready to listen? First, I would suggest you read the lessons for the coming Sunday during the week as part of your daily devotions. Second, pray over the readings and let the word of God seep into your bones. Third, read the prayer for the coming Sunday. It should give you some clues about the themes running through all three lessons. Fourth, prepare your heart for worship by confessing your sins, surrendering your heart and opening yourself up. Now you may have to do that at home before you leave the house on Sunday morning because St. Michael's tends to be a ruckus place. As you enter into the worship of the church, remember this is not about you. We do not come to church to worship ourselves. For one hour a week we are invited to step out of ourselves as best we can and as the people of God, offer our praise, worship and thanksgiving to Him. And in return we are instructed and challenged through the sermon. We are encouraged by the fellowship. We are nourished and strengthened through the sacrament and we are empowered to go out into the world. As the concluding prayer says; "Send us now into the world in peace and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart." Worship is our living sacrifice offered to God.
I will make a deal with you. Each week you come prepared for God to change you and rest assured I will come prepared to bring the fire. I will even sweeten the deal. Each week through the constant contact we will link to the readings and pray for the coming Sunday. So all you have to do is follow the link and "Voila" you are on your way to deeper faith and deeper worship.

50th Anniversary Campaign Update
Our goal is to raise $250,000 and we are half-way there. We are asking each family in the parish to consider giving a gift of $1,000 to the campaign. The gift could be given over 1-2 years; whatever fits your budget.
Now for some families, such a request will be a stretch while for others, it can be easily done. We are asking those with very tight financial means to give what they feel called by God to give. For those who have been blessed with greater resources, we would ask you consider giving a gift exceeding $1,000 in order to help a fellow parishioners' shortfall. We need for each member to be a part of this campaign.
To all who have already pledged, we are deeply grateful for your gift. For those who have not yet pledged, please prayerfully consider what you can give. Follow the link below for a pledge card.
Together we can reach our goal and prepare St. Michael's for our next 50 years.

"A Fresh Outpouring" Prayer Time
Starts Sunday, June 23, 7-8 p.m.
On the second and fourth Thursday of the month, we will be gathering in the chapel for one hour at 7 p.m. The objective is to surrender ourselves to the power of the Holy Spirit in prayer. So that means we have no idea where it will go and what will happen. We will be trusting God to lead and guide us to pray for what he wants. We will trust in Him to show us how he wants us to pray. I anticipate the gift of the Spirit will be manifest and power will be poured out. All are invited. Everyone is welcome.

Anglican Prayer Beads for Sale
A Message from Bob Bagley
After the course Terry and I offered on individual daily Morning Prayer, some of you were asking where you might find a set of Anglican prayer beads. Here's a wonderful answer: Wayne Pike has made up a selection of prayer bead sets for sale as a fund-raiser for the new Episcopal Outreach Mission in Racine - Bread of Life Hospitality Center.
(Full disclosure--I use a set of Wayne's beads as part of my daily devotion). Knowing Wayne made them is just so COOL!
Under the direction of Deacon Kevin Stewart, Bread of Life has been in existence for 5 weeks--serving the homeless and nearly homeless--with refreshment and community currently two days a week. I've been helping each day since the center opened and have seen how great the need is, and also how much difference a drink of coffee or juice, a donut, a magazine and perhaps a little conversation and acceptance can make in the lives of those most in need.
The suggested price is $20 for a set of Wayne's beads. But we know that times are tough-,o if price is a barrier for you, we'd accept as little as$ 10 so that we could raise needed funds for this new ministry and you can begin to use prayer beads in your daily prayer life. I will have beads for sale each Sunday. Please make checks out to St. Michael's Church, writing "Deacon's Discretionary Fund "in the "For" line of the check. I can also accept exact change.
Thanks for your support of this important ministry!
