Rector's Ramblings

Big Gifts From Above

The other week a person, who will remain anonymous by request, walked into the church and wanted to make a sizeable contribution to the church. There were some strings attached. First, the vast majority would go to help a family in the parish who is in great need. Second, the rest would be a donation to the church. Well, I could certainly live with those conditions so we accepted the gift. The next day I went to the family to whom the gift was to be given. I was invited into their home and I prefaced the conversation with, "I have a gift for you, but let me be perfectly clear. I have nothing to do with it other than the fact that I am the delivery person. Also, this is an anonymous gift and I can't divulge the source, so don't even ask." With that I handed this family a check for $12,000. That's right $12,000. Let me assure you there were tears of jubilation ringing out, theirs and mine, because God is good all the time.

Now if that is not amazing enough for you here's the part of the story which will blow your socks off. Do you know what the first thing these folks said to me after they finished crying? It was, "where do you want us to designate our tithe, the 50th Anniversary Campaign or the operations budget?" Can you believe that! I was stunned. Here are folks who have been run through the mill. They have been living with economic insecurity for some time and $12,000 just got dropped in their lap and they want to tithe.  My first reaction was to say, "No, you don't need to do that. You need the money so don't worry about the church." And as soon as that thought jumped into my mind, it was violently pushed out by a stronger voice which said to me, "Don't you dare rob them of their opportunity to thank me." It was as clear as day. And the voice was right. By telling them not to tithe, I would have been robbing them of their very tangible and profound way of giving thanks to God for this wonderful gift. I gathered my thoughts and said, "I think a gift to the 50th anniversary Campaign would be a fine way to give God thanks for this gift." I left those folks humbled by their faithfulness. In the midst of dire straits they received a gift from God and their first thought is to give thanks to God by giving their own gift of thanksgiving to the church.

Our 50th Anniversary Campaign is an opportunity for all of us to give thanks to God by blessing his church. It is through the church, the body of Christ, that the mission of God is fulfilled. What we do here is not self-seeking or self-serving. We are about the mission of God which is to seek and save the lost. Your gifts of thanksgiving build up the church and equip it for its mission which glorifies God and ushers in his kingdom. I want each and every member of this parish to think long and hard about the gifts we have received from the gracious hands of God through the life of His church. Now is a time we can give thanks in a tangible and powerful way.

 ST. MICHAEL'S RECREATION DAY:

HOW THIS DAY WORKS....

1. IDENTIFY AN ACTIVITY THAT YOU ARE INTERESTED IN:

Choose from the many suggested activities with sign-up sheets here OR if you have a new idea, and have a group willing to participate with you, you can list YOUR activity on this board.  Indicate your name, telephone number and the time(s) of the day on Saturday, June 4, that you are available to participate.  Remember that the RUNS and BIKE RIDES are scheduled for earlier in the morning, so it MAY be possible for you to participate in one of these "large group" activities AND one of the other smaller-group activities.

2. BE YOUR OWN LEADER:

Each activity will require a "CHAMPION".  That person will set-up the event, including location(s), time(s), cost(s), etc.   This may mean reserving tee times (golf) or reserving lanes (bowling), to locating and securing courts (volleyball).   It is the responsibility of the EVENT CHAMPION to contact those persons signed up on the Activity Sign-Up Sheet with final details.

3.  GO PLAY:

Once the location, time and team(s) are set up, GO PLAY and have fun!

4. TAKE PHOTOS AND/OR NOTES:

Record the participants, scores (if applicable) and note PTP'ers (PRIME TIME PLAYERS).  There will be a short awards ceremony following the 9:00 AM service on June 5th.  Photos will most certainly be used for blackmail purposes.

5. CELEBRATE SURVIVAL:

Come back to St. Michael's Church by 5:30 PM on Saturday to partake in the "Feast of the Fittest".  Celebrate your participation with all of the other participants in the other activities.   More details on this in the near future.

 Walk, Run or Cycle!

At our 50th anniversary "Recreation weekend" we are going to have two large events on Saturday morning, June 4.

A Family 5K walk/run. 8 a.m. That's right - walk, jog, run, push a stroller, be pushed in a stroller -  it doesn't matter. We want to get out there and play together. The course will be set out to avoid any dangerous roads. In fact, most of it will be on paved trails. This is a chance to get out there and stretch your legs with you church family and make some new friends. In fact, invite some of you non-church friends because the more the merrier. Our hope is that you will find folks who walk or run at your pace and you will connect with them in ways you never could at church. Maybe you will find a new walking or running buddy. We can all use more of those folks who get us up off the couch and outside doing what we need and love to do. To register for the 5K Walk/Run send an e-mail to info@stmichaelsracine.org,  give us your name and any folks your bringing and what you want to do (walk or run). We will contact you with all the details. The hosts for this event are Clint and Christi Klepp.

The 50th Anniversary Cycling Extravaganza.  Grab your spandex, water bottle and protein bar and get ready to hit the road. St. Michaels is sponsoring four different bike rides to suit any rider:

* Family Bike ride, June 4, 10 a.m. Mike Prudhom will lead a family-oriented bike ride from St. Michael's church to Cliffside Park and back again.  At Cliffside, there will be snacks and beverages available.  This route uses a combination of roads and crushed limestone.  Children riding with should be able to ride in the street and in a straight line.  Bicycles with racing-type tires may have difficulty on the gravel. This rides leaves St. Michael's at 10:00 in the morning, and will return by noon.

Host:  Mike Prudhom

* 13 mile bike ride -- For those who want to go a little further and a little faster. (1 hour)

Host:  This could be you!

* 24 mile bike ride -- For those who want a little challenge. There is a rest stop at mile 13. (2 hours)

Host: Scott and Lynn Meyer

*50 mile bike ride -- For those who are ready to ride. There will be a rest stop every 12 miles.  (4 hours)

Host: Terry McGugan

To register for the "Cycling Extravaganza" send an e-mail to info@stmichaelsracine.org, give us the distance you want to ride and the names of any friends you may be bringing. We will contact you with all the details.

If walking, running and cycling is not your thing you can participate in one of our many other small group activities. Here are some just to name a few: golf, tennis, fishing, kayaking, volleyball, bowling and any others you can think of. To register for a small group event please send an e-mail to info@stmichaelsracine.org, give us your name and the event you want to register for. Maybe you have an event you want to suggest or you want to host an event. Contact us with your ideas.

Remember let's get out there and play, Together!

Recognition Sunday

On Sunday, May 22, we will be celebrating all the people who work so hard to make Sunday service happen.  In order to make this celebration a success, we need help from all of you.

We are going to have a potluck breakfast so we will need egg casseroles, potato casseroles, fruit, muffins, and desserts. We also need people to help in the kitchen with the set-up and clean-up.  Please let us know what you can bring.  You can call Bernadette or Kathy at St. Michaels (639-2507) or e-mail us at blongden@stmichaelsracine.org or kpfaffle@stmichaelsracine.org.  Or leave a note on our desks, or just tell Bernadette in church.  Hope to see you at the breakfast.  It should be really fun!

Lion's Club Eyeglass Donation

Did you just get some new glasses, and don't know what to do with the old ones?  The Lion's Club collects used eyeglasses and sends them on missions to foreign countries.

There is a box in the church office by Kathy's desk for eyeglass donations.

Thanks for your support of this important ministry.
