"I Dare You!  I Double-Dog Dare you!"

Many years ago when I lived in Atlanta before I was ordained, I was a youth director at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. My best friend was and is a guy named Mitch Hutchinson. Well, Mitch was not a churchgoer and had grown up Southern Baptist. But he only attended the Baptist Church  because they had the best softball team in Sugar Valley, Georgia. And the rule was, "if you want to play you have to pray."  And so he did.

Well, back to Atlanta in the mid 1980s - Mitch was giving me a hard time about the Episcopal Church and how ridiculous all the marching around in dresses was in his mind. I tried to explain the ancient roots of liturgical worship and how liturgical worship engages all the senses of the body and therefore connects all that we are to God in the act of worship.  I might just as well have been speaking Portuguese to a penguin. Fortunately, Mitch's head was not as soft as the ball used in his favorite game. So I appealed to his more basic nature by proclaiming a challenge: "Mitch, I challenge you to attend all the Holy Week worship services with me.  If by the end of the week you think it is all a bunch of nonsense, I will never bring it up again."  He stared into my eyes. Then I upped the ante, "I dare you!"  His stare became a glare. I blurted out "I double-dog dare you!" There, it was I said it.  Mitch put out his hand and we shook on it.

To Mitch's credit, he attended every service in Holy Week that year. Mitch is now a Roman Catholic. When he got married a couple years ago, he and his wife flew to Rome for their honeymoon wearing their wedding dress and tuxedo.  They got a special audience with Pope John Paul and had their marriage blessed by the Pope.  Mitch credits that Holy Week 20 years ago for starting into motion the transformation of his heart, his faith and his life.  For it was in the liturgical worship of Holy Week that God touched his heart and began to stir up a hunger and thirst to know and love the living God.

So, when was the last time you blocked out the time and attended all of the Holy Week services - from Palm Sunday to Wednesday night Stations of the Cross, to Maundy Thursday service with the foot washing and the vigil in the chapel kept all night long, until 1 p.m. on Good Friday when we venerate the cross and feel the weight of Jesus suffering and betrayal, to the triumphant celebration of his resurrection on Easter Morning.  When was the last time you opened yourself up to God in such a tangible and powerful way as to walk with him on his journey to the cross and resurrection.  The liturgies of Holy Week have been a transformative journey of faith for Christians for thousands of years. Why don't you check it out this year and see what God might do to your heart and your life. I dare you!  I double-dog dare you!

It Was a Lovely Party!

On Saturday evening, March 26, we had the Celebration of Marriage reception with dinner and dancing.  Mary Cornelius and her crew transformed the Undercroft into a beautiful reception hall.  We ate a delicious meal prepared by Rose Adamski and her accomplished chefs.  Afterward, the floor was cleared for dancing.  Guy Singer and his dance partner taught us several dance steps, and a fun time was had by all (even those of us with two left feet).  The highlight of the evening was the dance exhibitions by JoEllen and Terry McGugan and Scott and Lynn Meyer.  If you have ever seen a good swing dance exhibition, it probably does not compare to Scott and Lynn's.  They were terrific!  A HUGE thank you to all the people who worked to make the evening a success.

The Celebration of Marriage continued on Sunday morning with a renewal of wedding vows.  This was a simple but very moving ceremony.  Marriage signifies to us the mystery of the union between Christ and his Church.  On Sunday we reaffirmed our commitment to our spouse and to Christ.  It was a blessing to be a part of it.

Campaign Corner

The symbolism of sprinkling water in the Episcopal Church is profound.  Traditionally, we sprinkle water to symbolize purification, blessing, dedication and the renewal of the baptismal covenant.  St. Michael's, however, has more sprinkling  than your average Episcopal Church.   "What?" you say.  "A sacrament I am unaware of?"  No, just a roof with "issues."

As many of you are painfully aware, the roof at St. Michael's occasionally leaks, causing an unexpected "sprinkling" in certain pews.  While investigating an unrelated roof issue last year, we asked our roofing contractor to investigate our problem.  We learned that the architect who designed St. Michael's must not have been of a Midwestern mindset.  You see, in climates with lots of snow, a roof typically will have a peak so that snow can slide off.  Rather than a peak, our roof has a trough.  Think of it like a big bathtub--a u-shaped divot in the top of our roof.  While consistent with the architectural style of the building, the "roof trough" is not very functional when it snows.  Every winter the snow that collects in the roof trough melts, and the water finds the easiest way to adhere to the laws of gravity.  It goes straight down, onto those sitting in the pews.

To remedy this problem, the Vestry has included repairing the roof as one of our campaign initiatives.  The cost for the project is roughly $30,000.  Visually, you won't notice much difference.  But, practically, we will be a much drier congregation!

First Communion Class on April 16

A First Communion class will be held Saturday, April 16, from 10-11 a.m. at St. Michael's Church. You can register your child for formal training by Fr. McGugan by calling the church office at 639-2507, or sending an e-mail to info@stmichaelsracine.org.

We need to know your child's name, age and whether they will be a "dipper" or "sipper." "Dipper" means they will be trained to dip the host in the chalice (intinction). "Sipper" means they ingest the host from their hands and sip from the chalice.

Following the First Communion class, we encourage you to have your child take their first communion on Easter morning, April  24.

Please register so we can order the appropriate amount of books and don't forget to indicate "sipper" or "dipper."

Youth Sunday is April 10

Our youth have spent this past semester using the scriptures to study the CREED (what Christians believe).  We looked for answers to a common assumption in the public square: Aren't all religions basically the same?

Our young adults will deliver their message during their reality show America's Next Top Disciple featuring Tyra Banks as host along with Moses and the Apostle Peter as judges. This year's contestants are among the brightest and most competitive super stars you'll find including WWE former champion John Cena, OO7 James Bond, Elmo and J-Lo just to name a few. Never before has a reality show had eternal rewards.

Do you have what it takes to be America's Next Top Disciple? Come and see for yourself on Sunday, April 10. Your life may never be the same.

Thanks from Wayne

Dear friends,

I wanted to take a minute to thank everyone for the last six years.  It has been wonderful meeting and getting to know everyone.  St Michael's has made a huge impact in my life.  I was kind of lost when I moved there, and thanks to my kids I found St Michael's.  I also found the Lord again and I never looked back.  I now have an amazing relationship with the Lord and believe that I can get through anything with Him.  I try to listen to his guidance and strive for a closer relationship with Him.  That is partly because of all of you.

I was up there last weekend getting some of my stuff and while at church on Sunday, someone asked what I was doing back.  Terry was standing there and jokingly said, "He forgot his church."  To which my son Josh said, "Oversized load."  That immediately made me think, "What a blessing to have such an oversized load."  It's true.  I couldn't find a truck big enough to take back all the love and support I have received from St Michael's.  I will forever walk about with my imaginary sign that says "Oversized Load."   And the next time I am driving down the road and I see a big truck with one of those "Oversized Load" signs, I will think of the blessings I received in meeting you all.  You guys are a truly amazing group of people and I will miss you.

Blessings and may you have an Oversized Load,
Wayne Pike
