Rectors Ramblings
I have learned both in my personal life and in my professional life that Mission and Vision are imperative to accomplishing goals. For many years St. Michaels Mission was "To glorify God through worship, discipleship, fellowship, ministry and evangelism." Over the last 6 months the vestry has been working hard to lay the ground work for effective and productive strategic planning. One of the first things we did was evaluate our mission and vision statements. We determined our mission statement needed more of an outward focus which incorporated the core Christian idea: "the church exists to reconcile the world to God". If that is true, then our mission statement needed to incorporate that spirit. After much prayer, discussion and word smithing the following mission statement was developed "The Mission of St. Michaels Church is to glorify God by making Christ know to the world through worship, discipleship, fellowship and service" In essence, all we do here in this church should and will glorify God by reach out beyond our walls. We desire to be a powerful instrument in the hands of God to reconcile the world to him.
The second part of our work was to revisit our vision statement. The reality is we have two vision statements; "Opening the doors to faith" and "Glorify God, build up his Church and usher in his kingdom". We realized these vision statements have become part of the very fabric of our common life together. And we are not proposing we jettison these formative statements, but rather expand upon them. By being a community committed to "opening the door to faith" and "glorifying God, building up his Church and ushering in his Kingdom", we have become "A Community of Grace". You can't come on a Sunday morning and not see Grace, feel Grace or receive Grace. Grace is acceptance no matter who you are or where you have been or what you have done. Grace is God's unmerited and unearned acceptance. St. Michaels' in so many ways embodies such Grace. Are we perfect? No! Are there more opportunities and circumstances in which we could exercise greater Grace with each other? Absolutely! But look around St. Michaels' and see the faces and the people, we come from all walks of life. We span the socio-economic, educational and political spectrum. We may not agree on politics. We may not agree on social policies. But we all agree each Sunday that we are sinners in need of a savior. Each Sunday when we bend our knees with hands outstretched like beggars seeking God's Grace, forgiveness, strength and comfort through the Holy Sacrament, we are reminded that we are all the same, equal. And it is there on our knees in humbled submission that we embody being "a community of Grace". Our challenge is to live Grace-fully within our church, our families our community and the world. So others may join us and taste the Grace, peace and serenity of knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
So our Mission is apparent "Glorify God by making Christ known throughout the world through worship, discipleship, fellowship and service". Our vision is clear. We are to be a "Community of Grace". Now our call is to live it.

A Secretary has been hired
Kathy Fpaffl is our new church secretary. She is so good we have to wait for her. Presently she is in a management position in the health care industry and has had to give her employer 4 weeks' notice. She will be starting with us on March 7th. Rest assured she is worth the wait. She has a background in project management, advertising and desk top publishing. Needless to say she is more then we could have hoped for. By the Grace of God we are a good fit for her at this time in her life because she wants to go part time so she can spend more time with her two teenage daughters and her husband. We are the benefactors of her choice to change up her life style. Please keep Kathy in your prayers as she prepares to make the transition.

Terry is alone at the wheel. Be very scared!
Bernadette Longden our parish administrator is on vacation from February 15th through the 23rd. We are waiting for Kathy to join our team in March. All this means... Terry is in charge of the office! I know you are filled with shock and fear. But rest assured, Bernadette has prepared things in advance so there should not be too much he can mess up. All we ask is that you be gentle with him. If the phone is not being answered immediately assume he is working on a sermon. If you come by the office and it's locked in the middle of the day assume he is at the hospital or making visits. In other words please exercise "charitable assumption" and don't jump to the conclusion he is taking a nap. Assume the best and pitch in where you can. And no worries Bernadette will be back and Kathy is coming.

Super Tuesday's course "Crazy Love"
is now six weeks long
After overwhelming interest in both "Crazy Love" and "Living Compass" the leadership of "Crazy Love" decided to condense the course from 12 weeks to 6 weeks. It doubles the weekly reading but the participants agreed to do it. Why? They made this concession because they wanted to take "Living Compass" with Scott Stoner. St. Michael's doesn't want you to have to choose between two great courses, so now you can do both. "Living Compass" starts March 22nd and you can register online by following this link. If you would like more information about "Living Compass" you can check out the web site http://livingcompass.org/

Youth Sunday
If you missed the 9:00 Service last Sunday, you missed something pretty special. The young people of the parish were the ushers, readers and choir. The church was filled with voices of preschoolers and gradeschoolers singing five songs. The music was wonderful. They were also a captive audience for the Sermon about Billy the Bull Frog. The kids all sat in the front while Father Terry told a story that gave a message that the children could learn from as well as all of the adults in the Church. It's really quite a sight to see such an animated sermon. If you missed this Youth Sunday, you really should do your best to make it to the next one. Instead of a regular Sunday School class, the Lil K and Johnny Rogers classes had a joint Valentine's Day party. The children had such a fun time exchanging valentine's, making cards and just playing together. A special thanks to the parents for their help in getting the kids ready for the day, and an even bigger THANKS to the Teachers. You are a special group of people!
