Is Farmers penalizing clients for paid up coverage periods? Dear Okie Voice, After a rough day at my Farmers's Office today, upon arriving home, I checked the home mail. Among the usual ads and junk mail, I found an envelope from Farmers. That's not surprising, as the wife's auto is due by May 19th, the envelope was the same white paper with the usual Farmers logo. But, I noticed the envelope seemed to have a tad larger window and the exposed contents inside were not the normal white paper. It was medium pink. Hummm, I thought, What's the deal? Farmers was the first envelope opened. (Hey, L.A. it gets your attention and works!) As I suspected, it was the second 1/2 billing due May 19th- But, Pink? We paid the first half before the February 19th renewal. Anyway, knowing the April tax hit was coming, we decided to split the premium into two payments and pay 1/2 in Feb. and the other half in 90 days as we are paid up (90 days) by the Feb payment to May 19th. This system has been in place for decades, even though you receive the 2nd half billing about 45 days from the renewal with a due date 60 days from the renewal, we have always been able to pay it closer to the 90 period. Oh No, not any more! The pink billing had an additional $15 in charges- a $10 late fee and a $5 service charge. Yet, the due date is still May 19th before the policy cancels. What the hey? The last half was already paid a nd posted to my policy on May 2nd and FIG still nailed me for a late and service fees? Service fees are generally charged on late payments. My office ACA'd the payment May 2nd According to the pink invoice mailed May 2nd, received May 4th, shows the second half balance was due March 30th. That's only 42 days from the renewal, not 60! So, they added $15 in fees and re-invoiced again due May 19th the 90 period paid from February. So, it strongly appears the clients are charged late fees on the second half amounts long before the premium is due! Or, has FAB changed the game plan and just forgot to tell us? So, beware of split billings when a client pays and advise them the traditional 60 days is now closer to 40 days and if not paid by the severely shortened second half due date will cost them a surcharge for the remaining days in the 90 day period. This sounds exactly like what the Big Ugly Monster Mega Banks do. Profit from educating their clients after the surcharge is billed. "Well, that's just the way it is- guess you will know better next time." Okie Agent.
Dear Okie, I tend to agree with your suspicions of double dipping with fees in the same policy period. Looking on Dashboard these charges and fees were effective Feb 1, 2012 and reprinted below for our readers. Remember, Okie, we are family and they do charge you back for Auto Full Pay discounts. So, check your June folio for the $1.00 you should earn on the additional $10 late fee and the full $5 service fee you earned as your office processed the payment! Yeah, Right? -ed

Senate Bill 1439 Toughens Penalties for Insurance Fraud
For Immediate Release: May 11, 2012 OKLAHOMA CITY - Tougher penalties for insurance fraud are on the way, thanks to the passage and governor's signing of Senate Bill 1439. Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner John D. Doak requested the bill, which is expected to save taxpayers millions of dollars. "The law sends the message that if you steal money from Oklahomans, we're going to come after you," said Commissioner Doak. The new law makes insurance fraud a felony. It also allows prosecutors to group several smaller thefts together and charge the perpetrator with a more serious crime. An example of this would be an unscrupulous agent charging someone $800 a month when the premium was actually just $700. After several months of overcharges, the crime would be elevated from a misdemeanor to a felony. The bill raises the punishment to as much as five years in prison. Thieves may also have to pay back twice the amount of money stolen. Right now, the fine is just $1,000. The bill also allows officials to seize any property obtained with the illegal funds. "This is a great piece of legislation that will go a long way in closing gaps and making our Anti-Fraud Unit more effective in pursuing insurance fraud investigations," said Michael Copeland, Director of the Oklahoma Insurance Department's Anti-Fraud Team. Gov. Mary Fallin signed the bill into law Thursday. It takes effect July 1, 2012. About the Oklahoma Insurance Department The Oklahoma Insurance Department, an agency of the State of Oklahoma, is responsible for the education and protection of the insurance-buying public and for oversight of the insurance industry in the state. |

Car Insurers Lose Traction Despite
Deluge of Advertising
Forbes 05/13/2012
Flo, the charismatic Progressive pitch woman. The endearing, geeky gekko from Geico. The ersatz college professor from Farmers Insurance's "university." The cloying pitchman for Nationwide. State Farm and its continual cast of celebrities, lately including the magician David Copperfield. The intonations of hip actor John Krasinski voice-overing TV ads for Esurance.
After a multi-year explosion in advertising and other outreaches by these brands, practically every American is now familiar with them and their product: auto insurance. The bad news for the brands is that fewer consumers are motivated by insurers' blandishments these days. The companies are pouring billions of dollars into marketing in attempts to carve out, or protect, scintillas of market share, but these huge investments no longer are moving the needle very much. Amoroso explains there was a 40 percent likelihood that someone purchasing a homeowners policy would consider buying from an agent the next time around. Only 30 percent of those buying personal auto policies said they would consider using an agent for their next insurance purchase.
Going in the other direction, approximately 20 percent of personal lines shoppers who currently use an agency channel would prefer to buy direct the next time. Read the whole story HERE

Only in Oklahoma!- Gov. Mary Fallin signs legislative bills Oklahoma Governor signs national leading bills for state residents:
May 15, 2012- Governor signs House Bill that allows open carry of personal weapons. Weapons are not allowed in churches, schools, universities, federal, state and municipal buildings. Nor, are they allowed in liquor stores, bars and clubs that serve alcohol. A concealed carry permit is required and will likely be renamed to a concealed-open carry permit.
May 16, 2012- Oklahoma Governor signs into law that new welfare applicants must take a drug test before benefits are paid. Also, includes optional screening of those already on the welfare system to check for drug abuse at the expense of all Oklahoma citizens.
May 19, 2012 Oklahoma Legislature is very close to lowering state income taxes on those making $35,000 or less (couples 70,000 or less) while 20% will see no change and 20% will see some increase. Update, this bill failed to pass in the final hours. May 16, 2012 - Not related to legislative bills-
Local news reports the state medical examiner's 42 year old body storage fridge has broke down and refrigerated trucks are responding to the ME's office to "cool down" the residents. Reports are that none of the deceased residents, including students, are complaining about the long wait time in Oklahoma to start their final exam
Oklahoma Beats Texas- Oklahoma beat out Texas for the warmest summer of 2011. Texas averaged 86.7 degrees over the summer while Oklahoma average temperature was 86.9 as both suffered severe drought. So far in 2012, Oklahoma has had the warmest period ever from March to May with May heading for the worst period ever for rainfall until the 31st day storms placed us in 4th driest ever.

Sharing 50/50
One day an older couple walked into a fast food restaurant and ordered one burger, large fries, one drink and an extra cup.
They found a table and sat down. The husband cut the burger in half and gave one half to his wife. Next he divided the fries evenly and gave half to his wife. Then he poured half the drink into the empty cup and gave it to his wife.
The wife began to eat while the husband watched.
Another gentleman observed this, walked up to the couple and asked whether they needed money to buy more food.
The old man replied, "No thanks. We share everything 50/50, and it's her turn with the teeth."

For yet another year, Farmers still remains below industry average in the Insurance Shopping Study while ranking next to dead last in the Property Claims Customer Satisfaction Study. In the last J D Power Shopping Study of 2009 Farmers Ranked 841 very near the industry average of 842
Dear Okie Voice, J D Power traditionally ranks USAA a top insurance provider. [shown above but not included in rankings] United Services Automobile Assn. is an insurance provider open only to U.S. Military personnel. Until recently, USAA only insured personnel with service dates back to 1991. However, they have now opened their membership to all x-military personnel, regardless of service dates in regular service, Reserves and National Guard with an honorable discharge.. Having ten years of military service, I called USAA in Ft. Worth recently after reading their website. I had to ask about their I-phone app that allows you to take a picture of your check payment or scan a paper check and email to them. I thought that was cool. Of course, they have all the traditional payment methods, too. I have a military friend insured, and he moved his autos to USAA last year saving about $400 a year. He warned me this year he was moving his home. However, we somehow were still a better price and we salvaged that one even with the loss of the auto/home discount. Shocker! So, I just may be moving my autos to USAA and check out their other of over 200 products and services. Sorry folks, they are a direct company and have no agents. Okie Agent. Dear Okie, I also have military service and believe that I will follow your lead on my next Farmers renewal as the use-to-be savings with my commissions and agent affinity discount are no longer a real benefit. -ed In the last JD Power Claims satisfaction study of 2009, Farmers ranked at 841 points.
