Dear Okie Voice,
I got this from a Washington State UFAA member: 03/16/2012
I Went to the District meeting today at FNWL. [State Exec] Brownie spoke for about 75 minutes. He talked about how profitable the state is and how "we've earned the right to grow". Where have you heard that before? He talked about the AMP program, AGM, Agency Platform and the PACE program. Company plans to double in size by 2020. He said not sure if we'll make it, but he said it was a worthy goal and we all have to do as much as we can to meet this goal. If we double in size, agencies will double too and you should try to get a piece of that pie by participating and being a supporter of all the company initiatives.... AMP and AGM. "Agency Platform" is a subsidy program for agents with 750 + policies, basically a loan to agents to grow their agencies, better signage, hire CSR's, expand their offices. You have to be in the AGM matrix and you need a business plan. You can "run to daylight" at 50% or 100% forgiveness on the loan, if you meet certain production parameters. They assign you a "mentor" to "help" you and expect you to go to the University of Farmers (not just online). If you have more than 1500 PIF, you can "borrow" more.
The interesting thing he talked about was the PACE program. Right now it's all about the company taking policies from "retiring" agents and selling them to acquiring agents at 150% of one year renewals. PACE 2.0 is where they allow the "retiring" agents to sell their book to an acquiring agent for 150%. PACE 3.0 is where they allow "retiring" agents to sell their book for market value, whatever they can negotiate. I think I heard him say that PACE 3.0 was 1 1/2 to 2 years away, not sure why, but PACE 2.0 was soon? He started talking very low and I was at the back of the room. I hate to stand up and ask questions as I like to keep a low profile as much as possible. Maybe I'll get more clarification later.
Talked more about you have to invest in your agencies, get excited, quote more and write more business. He can't believe that many agents don't have staff and some don't even have an office. Not going to tolerate that and he's making "office calls", doing a 360 degree view, inspecting and offering suggestions on how to improve your office. He inspected 2 offices this morning and will be making the rounds.
He said a bunch about we have to change to grow. It's not like the old days, have to use AMP to solicit, the phone book is toast. If you're not on the band wagon and you think you're going to stand pat, you need to find a new line of work. Very opinionated and stubborn about this.
Judging from his tone and his talk, he doesn't care what anybody thinks. It's his way (the company way) or the highway. He's just flat wrong. Insurance is a business of building relationships and trust. People want familiarity and to deal with someone they know and trust at a reasonable rate. He acted like the rate didn't even matter, it's just a matter of quoting, the more you quote, the more business you will write.
We're toast, we better get ready.
Dear Washington Agent, You say, "We are toast? " Your United Farmers Agents Association has put Farmers on notice on behalf of all UFAA Members only. Just read the next article for some refreshing statements and proudly post it in your office or use it to reply to a communication sent to you by an over demanding DM or State Exec. -ed |

Opting out of AMP Program has its'
Unknown Challenges
Dear Okie Voice, "I just received my new phone book and low & behold I was removed out from under the Farmers Trademark Listing in the yellow pages after 17 years. I called the State Office and asked him who I needed to talk to at Home Office about my situation here. I was if I was an AMP agent. I asked him what that had to do with my yellow page listing and was told something about Farmers trademark and the AMP Program, but stated they would check with Home Office and get back to me. I told them we have approximately 20 agents in my town (changes daily) and now only 5 agents appear under the trademark listing in the yellow pages. I told them the consumers will look at this like we are out of business. I also advised them that I never received any notification that you had to be an amp agent to be listed under the Farmers trademark in the yellow pages and this was the first I've heard of it. Anyway, a couple days later I received the email below."
"just wanted to follow up with you regarding the trademark listing for the yellow pages. I checked with home office and my assumption was correct that the reason you were not included in that particular ad was because you are not an AMP agent. Hopefully that helps. Thanks"
Doesn't this have a ring of discrimination to it? No listing under the trademark, unless you're an AMP person? You just have to love it! What's next, you can't have a Farmers sign in front of your office, can't have the Farmers name on your office window, can't wear Farmers apparel, or can't have a Farmers bumper sticker on your vehicle, unless your on the amp program? My question is, "Where will it stop?" Give me a break! Okie Agent
Dear Okie, We have heard a few complaints on this subject over the past year. We thought it just may be where the ad contract was not signed, returned by the agent or fell through the processing cracks. However, lately such complaints have risen dramatically. Without proper lead notification of your trademark ad being jerked, leaves you with few options to advertise your business. This appears to be a serious business interference violation. Your question of "Where will it stop" is right on the mark.
Farmers seems to have increasingly controlled most aspects of the agents' INDEPENDENT FARMERS AGENCY not always to the agent's advantage such as approving agents to open a new office across the street from a seasoned agent; or little opportunity for an agent to convert orphan policies to a decent commission rate, etc, etc. It would appear the company is building a process of certain agents that will be controlled from all aspects just like this graphic below where they can program and control the agent's activities at will.
I would remind you of Okla. Statutes Title 36. Insurance: Section 1435.15 Paragraph E - Producer Acting as Agent. Looks like you and many other Okla. Agents may have a good case here. "It shall be unlawful for any insurer to discriminate among or between the insurance producers it has appointed. Any person or company convicted of violating the provisions of this section shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be punished by the imposition of a fine of not more than Five Hundred Dollars ($500.00) or imprisonment in the county jail for not less than six (6) months nor more than one (1) year, or be punished by both said fine and imprisonment." This law is a criminal offense and appears to prohibit placing agents into categories or segmentation and other actions that would create one or more agents an advantage or disadvantage over other agents. Under the definition, it would appear the AGM Program is highly discriminatory to a producer agency force. Although, the OID would have to make that final call based on complaints from producers. Okie Agent, you may file your complaint at this link. Where will it stop, you ask? Farmers seems to operate with the opinion the "The Agent's silence is his or her approval." So, the silent majority in this business is not always to your advantage, along with some of the programs offered. -ed |

Farmers Insurance launching Md. operations in Owings Mills
Farmers Insurance is opening an agent recruiting and training center in Owings Mills as it breaks into the Maryland market. The Los Angeles-based company, which sells auto, home, life and other insurance products, has about 20 employees on staff at its new location on Red Brook Boulevard. It expects to double the number within 12 to 18 months with trainers, customer service representatives and clerical staff.
Farmers wants to get at least 250 agents - independent contractors rather than employees - trained and working across the state in the next five years, said Gregor Scott, a regional vice president with the company. Farmers, now operating in 32 states, is pushing to expand to the rest of the country.
David S. Brown Enterprises, which manages the Red Brook Corporate Center, said Monday that the insurer signed a lease for 22,700 square feet beginning last Thursday. The length of the lease was not disclosed.

John replied, "Well, yesterday morning, I waded along the edge of a lake, escaped from wild dogs in the heavy brush, marched up and down several rocky hills, stood in a patch of poison ivy, crawled out of quicksand, and jumped away from an aggressive rattlesnake." Farmers Agency Hit By Alabama Tornado
3.5.12 Elizabeth Gentle

Residents and business owners took advantage of Monday's sunny weather to clean up and make repairs from Friday's tornado damage.
Rhonda Moore owns Farmers Insurance Group on Highway 231-431. Despite extensive roof damage to her office, it is work as usual.
On Monday, agents filed claims and handled business from their vehicles in the parking lot.
Moore and her son Mark were at work Friday when the tornado hit.
She said they were watching WAFF48 news when the tornado warning was issued.
Mark used his cell phone to video the twister before they had to dive for cover.
'We could hear it waited till the last minute ran in and hunkered down. Started praying as quick as it ripped my roof off it was over you could tell it had gone,' said Rhonda Moore.
Moore says if you need to file a claim, come by their office. Agents are outside waiting to assist you.
Moore doesn't know yet if the building is a total loss or if it can be salvaged.

Concerning the Pulse of the Agent Polls Above: It is most difficult to run a simple survey on some complex issues using just one simple survey question. For example, comparing gross commissions in 2011 vs. the previous two 5 year periods, the results can easily be skewed on higher incomes over 10 years due to (1) agent focusing more on life and commercial as many have done. (2). Assignments of orphan policies as many have received. (3). Having business in a competitive rated territories/zips reducing PIF runoff and to those who have just worked extremely hard.
Yet, the survey shows 72% of agents at the same or less income in 2011 compared to the previous 10 years.

Greetings!
Who Is the Devil You Know? SOCIOPATH: of, relating to, or characterized by asocial or antisocial behavior or exhibiting antisocial personality disorder. --http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sociopathic "Four percent of Americans are sociopaths, meaning that they have no conscience, and this statistic probably gets larger as one goes up the ladder of success. At the top echelons of success in big business, sociopaths are probably even more plentiful. Most sociopaths in business are not physically violent, and they don't look like Charles Manson. They look like we do." This the assessment of Dr. Martha Stout, author of The Sociopath Next Door. Her book cover says "1 in 25 ordinary Americans secretly has no conscience and can do anything at all without feeling guilty. Who is the devil you know?" If you hear the word "sociopath," the images of Ted Bundy, Stalin, Hitler come to mind. But Stout tells us not to limit our awareness, that sociopaths usually aren't violent. So how do we spot sociopaths? Sociopaths show sham emotion, but in reality emotion is only a tool to dominate and win when they aren't in complete control already. They bring a charisma, a charm, and they especially flatter. (It's a lie, don't buy it). In business, they might honor a person for achievements or longevity, in publication, at an honors banquet, but without a second thought put him or her out with tomorrow's newspaper, if it suits a corporate goal. Sociopaths are seductive in encouraging others to take risks. Even better for them, they want you to blindly accept their authority along with the risk. It may be a president who flatters the people as super-patriots in order to lead them into a dumb war. It may be a company CEO who infers "the intelligent ones" in the sales force are the ones who will go out and spend an obscene sum for the latest program or tool. Don't believe flattery. We might also point out that any company publication which only prints one side, one flattering view of (anything) without inviting honest alternate views (dissent), is a publication of seduction. Ever hear of a habitual liar, the cheating spouse? Remember a teacher who was abusive? How about a business partner who is always changing the deal, ignoring past agreements, intimidates by threat, overt or covert? These are classic sociopaths. So how do you deal with the sociopath in your life? First, accept reality. Not all sociopaths look like Klingon warriors. They look like us. Second, trust your instincts. We meet, assess, and judge people all the time as to who they are. Women are known to have a 'sixth sense' awareness, but men do too. Don't accept a stranger's credentials, income, education, position, or specialty skills as a conscience, regardless of how impressive they may be. You cannot bestow conscience on anyone who didn't have it to begin with! We repeat: Don't assign morality to people by their degrees or trappings. Moral sources such as Jesus, Buddha or Gandhi did not wear expensive suits or wave a diploma to convince anyone of their altruistic natures, and actually warned it is a fool who believes the unknown stranger, or, the repeat offender. If you don't know the person, one lie or broken promise may only be a mistake. Two may be a bad habit. But three times means you've got a deceitful liar on your hands, and lying is Ground Zero for a conscienceless personality, the sociopath. Do not give your money, your work, your secrets or your affection to a three time violator. The best way to protect yourself is to walk away from the sociopath. Don't use politeness with a sociopath, either. Don't smile, get to the point, let them know you are on to the game. You cannot redeem him, you cannot change his ways. Sociopaths live outside the social contract, so exclude them from your personal life, and as much as possible, from your professional life. It may mean you have to skip the annual company banquet (free food!) where you are told with a warm phony smile, "we are family". But don't worry, any display of hurt feelings for your blunt statements, your absence, is only a sham. Sociopaths simply don't have any bad feelings, and ironically, that's their core problem. When they take your money away, when they take your job of decades, when they cripple your ability to perform and then threaten to dismiss you for failure to perform, when they ruin your finances, when they break faith with past promises and contracts, and finally, when they put you out tomorrow with today's newspaper, remember, they won't feel bad.
