UFAA Chapter 15 Officers wishes each of you an extremely happy and prosperous new year in 2011. Unfortunately, 2009 and 2010 were not the best as a result of the economy, competition and the company's unexplainable black box rating experiments on home & landlord policies in 2009 and autos in 2010. Since there's not much left in our book to pick on in 2011, perhaps, we will get some meaningful good news when "Farmers takes the Agents to the Movies" on Jan 20th. More on that later in this issue. Let's hope this will be our best year ever for rebuilding what has been lost. The best of business and luck to you in 2011.

Wind changes & HelpPoint BBB Ratings in OKC are now B+
Seemingly, the Oklahoma City HelpPoint locations are rated by the BBB like Farmers rates the FA2 Autos. Sorta depends on what? The temperature or perhaps, the wind direction?
Through October, 2010, HelpPoint was rated as "F" by the BBB. In mid- November, the rating was combined with the Farmers Corporate rating of an "A+." As soon as we sent out the December issue of the Oklahoma Voice, the wind changed again and both Corporate and HelpPoint were rated "NR" no rating. On Dec 7th, the OKC BBB rating has changed again, dragging the corporate rating down to a B+. But, at least, we are generating some interest in this subject with home office. Now, if they would just get busy on improving the "F" rated Tulsa Property Office, we could finally drop this article- at least until the wind changes again. Unfortunately, Farmers Tulsa Property Office still shows "F" rating.

REVISED MVR Processing Changes in Express #10-0752 REVISED We are modifying Personal Insurance Express to decrease the number of Underwriting referrals for 'No Hit' Motor Vehicle Report orders.
....Keep in mind you'll be charged for each attempted MVR order following each correction you may make to driver names, dates of birth, or license numbers. The costs for no-hit MVRs vary by state, though generally the charge is less for a no-hit than a successful order. Once you "submit" to underwriting, you will be reimbursed for one MVR order per driver. Contact your DM if you have questions. STATE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
This Is just another in an ongoing series of "Passing underwriting labor and MVR costs to the Agency Force." As an Independent Contractor, you are now required to replace underwriter's duties and re-order no hit MVRs up to four times per driver. You will be charged for every MVR if policy is not written. Or, reimbursed for 1 MVR per driver on sold policies regardless of the number ordered per household driver @ $25* ea. As is typical, the bulletin creates more questions than it answers. Neither the bulletin, the Oklahoma State Office or your DM likely followed up with YOUR cost of a Oklahoma "NO HIT" MVR." Inquiring minds want to know the cost for a "no hit" MVR in Okla .
Oklahoma DPS Provides the Answer << You may copy this Date:12/10/10 "Thank you for your inquiry to the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety." In Oklahoma, by law, hit and no-hit MVRs are both valid MVRS and cost the same. The statutory charge for an MVR is $25*." David Beatty DBeatty@dps.state.ok.us Director, Records Management Oklahoma Department of Public Safety
You read it here first. A "No Hit" MVR is valid under Oklahoma law. So, that makes bulletin 10-0752 rather useless, right?
P.S. Farmers updated bulletin 10-0752 two days later on 10-14-10. you can view it by using the search tool on Dashboard main page enter: HOTP Recap of MVR Status You may copy the DPS response above for later use when in a challenge contest with ServicePoint telling you it's your job to re-run valid no hit MVRs. -ed *There is a vendor(?) fee of $2.78 added to the $25 MVR fee in Oklahoma.

Zurich Farmers Group Settles Class Action For $545M
Nu Online news reported on Oct. 18 The proposed settlement agreement resolves all claims dating back to 1999, including those within the lawsuit filed in August 2003. Under the terms, $455 million will potentially go to 13 million policyholders who may qualify for a payment under the settlement. This averages to about $35 per class member, Zurich said. Up to $90 million will pay plaintiffs' attorney fees, the company said. Plaintiffs agreed to drop all claims against Farmers Group and Zurich.
[Zurich CEO,] Mr. Senn said that to "put to rest" issues brought up in the lawsuit, Zurich has launched new initiatives to educate Exchange policyholders and Farmers agents about the agreement between Farmers and the Exchange.
Zurich Finan cial Profit Down On Farmers Settlement Chad Hemenway NU Online News Service, Nov. 04, 3:36 p.m. EDT
Zurich Financial Services Group said it earned $751 million during the third quarter as results were affected by a legal settlement involving its Farmers Group subsidiary. Zurich took a charge of $295 million related to a proposed settlement in Fogel vs. Farmers Group Inc., a nationwide class action suit pending in Los Angeles Superior Court that alleges the insurance group overcharged for fees paid by the Farmers Exchanges. Zurich's net income of $2.4 billion for the first nine months is down 18 percent compared with last year at this time, the company said.
Profit in Zurich's general insurance segment is down 22 percent as of Sept. 30 due to weather-related losses and the earthquake in Chile, as well as declines in investment returns. Rate increases and underwriting action during the year thus far helped the company's loss ratio in this segment, but the weather events and lower earned premiums resulted in a combined ratio of 97.8 compared to 96.9 at this time last year. The Farmers segment turned in a $1.3 billion profit for the first nine months compared to about $1.13 in 2009 at Sept. 30.
Zurich Financial To Cut Expenses [Half Billion] By 2013
Chad Hemenway NU Online News Service, Dec. 03, 3:43 p.m. ESTZurich Financial Services Group said it is looking to reduce expenses by $500 million in an effort to improve profitability. Zurich's net income of $2.4 billion for the first nine months was down 18 percent compared with last year at this time. Martin Senn, chief executive officer of the insurance provider, told investors Zurich's is "well-positioned to outperform in a challenging environment."
"We believe that our agility, superior financial strength and strategic focus allow us to meet the industry challenges of low investment returns and new regulatory capital regimes," Mr. Senn said. The company's goal is to have an [investor] return on equity of 16 percent "over the medium term."
Of the $500 million in expense reductions by 2013, $350 million is to come from the group's general insurance segment. The combined ratio in this segment looks to improve by 3-4 points by 2013, according to the company, while focusing direct efforts Germany, Italy and Switzerland. Zurich also will accelerate the release of $1.5 billion in capital from non-core business by 2015.
The group's Farmers subsidiary aims to maintain its growth despite tough economic conditions. According to CEO Bob Woudstra, Farmers grew market share 1.1 percent in the last three years, outpacing the top 12 U.S. personal lines insurers. Based on the improved underwriting and operating performance of the U.S. subsidiaries of Zurich Insurance Company, rating agency A.M. Best recently upgraded the insurer's financial strength rating to "A-plus" from "A," with a stable outlook, to reflect Zurich's strong capitalization and enterprise risk management. Zurich told investors on Dec. 2, 2010 the expense reduction would exclude commissions. Market Share? Remember, Farmers purchased B-W book in 2007 and 21st Century Book in 2009 -ed

Farmers Taking Agents to Movies If the DM has not told you, Agents in Okla. (as in other states) are receiving DM emails to a required meeting at a local movie house. In Oklahoma, it'll be held in Tulsa & OKC Jan 20th. The reason is not yet clear but, we're hearing it's perhaps, a corporate-wide live or pre-recorded simulcast announcement from either Zurich or L.A. with the suits advising you of "Good News," we hope or more demanding new rules & costs. Recent Agent Poll respondents have told the Okla. Voice DMs fail to advise, on average, 83% of agents on corporate info passed through DM offices. So, you likely heard it here first. Bring Popcorn! Perhaps, it has to do with the half billion dollar cost cut throughout corporate. Wonder who the suits will blame? -ed
