Project to fight drug, alcohol use wins federal grant
Our Family Services, on behalf of the 29th Street Coalition and in partnership with PAXIS Institute, has been awarded a federal grant for a project to prevent alcohol and other drug abuse among youth.
The Drug Free Communities grant, from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), totals $625,000 over five years. The Drug Free Communities program is directed by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) in partnership with SAMHSA. Our Family is among 161 new grantees selected from 417 applicants.
Starting October 1, this project will offer prevention programming to youth and families in the 29th Street corridor area, which is bounded by Country Club Road, 22nd Street, Craycroft Road, and Aviation Highway/Golf Links Road. The project aims to reduce the availability of alcohol and tobacco to area youth, and to increase positive behaviors in youth and their families.
Our Family's Community Services Manager, Victor Quiros, will act as project director for the grant, and Our Family staff will provide the majority of the direct prevention services. The program will be offered throughout the 29th Street Coalition area in schools, apartments, neighborhoods, churches and youth-serving organizations.
The 29th Street Coalition serves a 2.8 square mile area that contains five neighborhoods, 21 of the cheapest apartment complexes in Tucson and 51 liquor licenses.

Gift Tree right around the corner
For more than 20 years, the Holiday Gift Tree has helped clients of our programs who were in need of a little extra help during the holidays.
If your service club or business is planning a holiday charity drive or giving program this year, please think of Our Family's clients, many of whom are struggling harder than ever just to get by.
Adopt the name and wish list of a child or homeless teen, or donate gift cards to help a homebound senior purchase food and necessities. Or consider conducting a drive of diapers, basic hygiene supplies, or adult incontinence supplies.
For information about the 2009 Holiday Gift Tree, please contact Janeen Delgado at 323-1708 x 105 or jdelgado@ourfamilyservices.org
