Small Wind Certification Council July 2010
|
|
Greetings!
The Small Wind Certification Council (SWCC) reached a
major milestone in June as we announced the first 13 turbine models with
pending applications for certification.
We've heard from numerous additional manufacturers beginning the process, and our list is now up to 14 pending applications. After so much preparation, it's fantastic to see the process under
way. As the first certification
inches closer, the need for it is becoming clearer. Several states are moving closer to requiring certification
by SWCC or similar entities in order to qualify for incentives and rebates. We expect a lot of big news in the upcoming months, as we
anticipate certifying the first turbine model by the end of the year. SWCC staff will be at several events,
highlighted below, to provide manufacturers and consumers more information
about the certification and what it means for the future of small wind as well
as to participate in standard development activities. You can participate in the American Solar Energy Society
webinar on June 13. And, as
always, I'm available if you have questions or comments about the process. Larry SherwoodExecutive Director |

SWCC Announces First 14 Turbines with Pending Applications
In June, we announced the first pending applications for
certification with the SWCC. The majority of the turbine models are just beginning the field testing
process, and a few are well along. We anticipate certifying the first turbine
by the end of 2010, and most of the turbines receiving certifications in 2011
or after. The first 14 turbines
with pending applications are listed below, and we keep an updated list of
applications and their status available on our website.

ASES Small Wind Division Holds Webinar on SWCC
The ASES Small Wind Division bi-monthly webinar series
continues on Tuesday, July 13, 2010 (11:30 am-1 pm PT; 2:30 pm-4:00 pm ET) with
an overview and status update on the SWCC. This webinar will help dealers and installers understand how
SWCC certification may affect their businesses.
SWCC certification will help consumers make more informed
choices on the small wind turbines they purchase. The certification will include labels on each certified
turbine that will detail performance and sound ratings as well as durability
and safety compliance with the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) Small
Wind Turbine Performance and Safety Standard. This will help boost the small wind industry, but will
change many aspects of business for dealers and installers.
The webinar will be presented by Larry Sherwood, SWCC's
Executive Director.
To participate in the webinar, click on this MyMeetings link
and enter the pass code below. There's
also a dial-in number for the audio portion if you would prefer to listen by
telephone.
Audience audio and net pass code: 3444268
Participant Audio Call-in Number: 877-950-3593 An audio
and PDF archive of the webinar will be posted on NREL's Wind Powering America small wind webpage.

State and Utilities Moving Towards Requiring Certification Certification will enable consumers to make more informed
decisions about small wind turbines. But, more importantly, states and
utilities can use SWCC certification as a means to qualify turbines that are
eligible for incentives. The New York State Energy Research and Development
Authority (NYSERDA) accepts SWCC certification for qualification for rebates,
and the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) requires either SWCC
certification or NYSERDA approval.
As of January 1, 2012, small wind turbines
not certified to the AWEA Standard or applicable sections of IEC 61400 will no
longer be eligible for incentives from the Energy Trust of Oregon. In
Wisconsin, Focus on Energy has established a new provisional incentive for
small wind turbines pending certification. Several other states and utilities have identified SWCC
certification as a pathway to eligibility for incentives or expect to require
certification as a requirement for eligibility for funding or
interconnection. Links to
incentive requirements are listed on our website.
