Message from the President
Alicia Mutch, ABWA Chapter PresidentWelcome back!
We've had a nice summer break, and the Wine Country Chapter is refreshed and ready to begin the 2009-2010 year! We had a planning meeting over the summer, and from that meeting, we came up with some great speakers for our dinner meetings along with strategies to continue serving our members in this recessed economy. One of the things we heard from members was that the cost of our dinner meetings had become a little challenging, so we put our heads together and came up with a less expensive venue that is closer to our members in Healdsburg, and still close enough to our members in Santa Rosa and Sebastopol to please almost everyone. The menu will have plenty of meal choices for all of our members, and I can attest to the great food! See the article below for more information.

Guest speakers
The primary focus of our dinner meetings this year will be on our guest speakers. They will each give a 45-minute presentation, and the topics will concentrate on helping you to improve and expand your business, with en emphasis on marketing your business and yourself in the "new economy."

Seeking two board members
Our Vice President of Membership and our Treasurer both became inundated with a very heavy workload and were unable to commit to a full year on our board of directors. If you are interested in volunteering for one of these two board positions, please email me. Thank you!

Ongoing mentoring
ABWA is also looking to provide you with a new way to give back to your community -- through the gift of mentoring. We already give scholarships to women at Sonoma State and the Santa Rosa Junior College. Now we have an exciting opportunity to also collaborate with a local mentoring organization, which can provide all of us with the  resources to continue to impact women in our community, one woman at a time.

It's going to be a great year!

See you soon!

-Alicia Mutch
We're Moving to Windsor
We've changed our dinner meeting venue! Our next dinner meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 15 at Johnny Garlic's in Windsor. The address is 8988 Brooks Road South, and it's located in the Safeway shopping center near the downtown Windsor exit from 101.

We will be networking from 6:30 to 7:00, and our dinner meeting begins at 7:00. All members and guests are welcome.

If you would like, you may bring a bottle of wine with you to share with your table. Drinks are also available for purchase from the bar.

Yes, we've reduced the price of our dinners! The price of the dinner meeting is $25 for members and $30 for guests. In addition to the great price, you will have a variety of meal choices from Johnny Garlic's banquet menu. To RSVP for the dinner meeting, please visit our website. RSVPs must be received by the day before our meeting for us to guarantee you a meal. We love early RSVPs!
Speaker & Topic of the Month
Financial Fitness:  The Importance of Accurate Financial Statements for your Business

Cindi Brown is our guest speaker for our September meeting, and she will focus on the importance of accurate financials and how to use them to make important business decisions. She will share some examples of the good, the bad, and the ugly and how lenders depend on financial statements, credit history and cash flow to make loans.

Cindi has thirty years of banking experience with Bank of America, starting as a part time teller in San Bruno and retiring as a Vice President and Branch Manager in Healdsburg.  She held just about every position possible from teller to underwriter and had excellent training.

In 2002, Cindi was referred to a high-end retailer in Healdsburg who was going through some challenging times.  She was hired as the GM for and assisted in getting the company back on their feet.  One year later the President of North Coast Bank who was looking for a business development officer contacted her.  Now she is the Vice President of Business Development and Merchant Bankcard Services Manager.  She loves what she does.
Mentoring Opportunities
for Women in Business

Mentoring is one of the things that ABWA is known for as a national organization. Our chapter holds a mentor meeting every year (usually in March or April) to honor our mentors and to spotlight mentoring organizations. However, rather than focusing on mentoring once a year, what if we created an ongoing mentoring opportunity for our members? A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of speaking with Diana Ruiz, who is a volunteer with the Global Women's Leadership Initiative. They are a new organization in Sonoma County, and they are seeking to develop a network of professional women in business, education, non-profit and professional organizations, as well as political and community leaders, who appreciate the need for leadership development and mentoring for young women in Sonoma County.

Diana and I are going to meet to discuss a collaboration between our Wine Country Chapter and the Global Women's Leadership Initiative to offer mentoring opportunities between our members and other women in business. If you appreciate the people who have mentored you along your career path and are interested in paying it forward, this collaboration is right up your alley!

To find out more about the Global Women's Leadership Initiative, you are cordially invited to attend an introductory seminar. It will include refreshments, a brief informative presentation, and lively dialogue.

Date: Saturday, September 26, 2009
Time: 10 a.m. until 12:30 noon
Place: Empire College
3035 Cleveland Avenue, Santa Rosa, CA 95403
