Chicamocha Unique dry forest saved by WLT-US
Thanks to our donors, we have just acquired and protected 3,215 acres of unique dry forest in the Chicamocha valley of Colombia. The new reserve, managed by our local partner Fundacion ProAves, will be the first protected area for many endangered plant and animal species, including the Niceforo's Wren of which only 50 individuals remain. WLT-US supported the construction of an attractive Ecolodge at Jorupe Reserve in southern Ecuador. The reserve, established with WLT-US support, protects many endemic bird and plant species of the endangered Tumbesion dry forest ecosystem. Revenues from the new ecolodge will help sustain the managment costs of the reserve for Fundacion Jocotoco. Read more about the lodge...
Antisana conservation project update
One of our most ambitious projects is to protect the high-altitude paramos and cloud forests surrounding the Antisana Volcano in northern Ecuador. The current owners of this area wish to sell 250,000 acres of private lands that hold the last refuge of the Andean Condor in Ecuador and serves as an important watershed for the city of Quito. We have been working hard to involve a group of private and public funders to commit to this project, which will cost $5-7 million to achieve. However, municipal elections in Quito will change the city administration in August, requiring us to wait until then to proceed with any joint conservation action program. We'll keep you posted on project progress.
